I sort of only opted to read my two if they get chosen (even one does me) and then go for the one with the most hopefully. This time it just so happened that Fairfield Hall was at our local one and read it while I waited for Ballroom Café.

And this time the Ruth Hamilton one was there, so can read it while I wait for the Throw Away Children. I didn't choose Throw away children because not only did they go to Australia, they came to NZ as well and some of these poor children came under some rough treatment by the people here. We have had TV programs and articles on the subject and seen the people now grown up and in some cases have been reunited with their families many years later.

Always remember Polly Poppet looking for her father's sister and Janey was a great help in finding her.

Mixed Race has always been around over here Tess, probably because there are so many Maoris that married white people. It was just the norm. Now we have become even more mixed.. 41% of NZ's population were not born in this country.

I opted to read the one that is chosen first as long as it is not expensive to buy. And the ones I suggest. So I am reading throwaway children.

Perse. the polite term in the Birmingham area iin the 60's, 70's, and 80's was half- caste.

Other, far more derogatory terms were also used. In my case, as a twelve year old girl, but looking a lot younger, it was not unusual to be followed by a bunch of children chanting "go home wog". They also called my wonderful mother names because " she went with black men, (insert any other derogatory term here).
Perhaps people would have been kinder to Petal because she was do young, but an unaccompanied mother of a non-white child was likely yo be given short shift.

I am thankful that things have changed for the better.

While living in Malaya, c1959/60 I read about N.Z. loved what I learned about it and have wanted to visit ever since.
Perhaps one day I will get my wish.
I truly feel that New Zealand is the Land of my Soul.
