Have you looked to see whether anyone whose name you don't recognize has your father in a GR tree?

Sorry if I was not clear about Eric and Ann births.

Do any of your relatives have any vague idea of the first name of Eric and Ann's Mother?
If it was talked about at the time then it was not hidden.

Steppingstone

Steppingstone Report 28 Jun 2013 20:22

It was known but not spoken about, and the only surviving person who can remember them vaguely is the daughter of my aunt and uncle who lived opposite Eric and Ann when they were little. She only knows their names as her older sister told, but she is no longer with us. It wasnt talked about after my dad got married and my mam only found out when Eric came knocking on the door years later. Thank you

We think we may have a match, the Eric and Anne Holgate/Welbourn you told me about, the dates match so we may have found them. Next step is to get a copie of their birth certificates to see if they have my dads name on them- John Hagues and then trace them, thank you Mandy

ErikaH Report 28 Jun 2013 21:33

Sorry to dash your hopes, but those birth certs will have the father's name of Holgate and MMN Welbourn.

When a married woman had a child, it was assumed that her husband was the father.....................she would hardly have told the registrar otherwise.............and there is no evidence to suggest that these children were not born to the parents whose surnames are on the index

Marriages Jun 1939 (>99%)

Holgate Frederick Welbourn Holderness 9d 220
Welbourn Valerie I Holgate Holderness 9d 220

We've reached the conclusion that Eric Holgate is not the Eric we re searching for so the search is back on. Any ideas please, running out of them thanks Mandy

Why do you think he is not your Eric?

How is the newspaper search going?

Eric and Anne Holgate also had a brother Anthony.

Because of the birth certificate. Eric's mother was living with my father when Eric was born and cannot see her naming someone else as the father. The newspaper search a lot of time and I have to travel on my days of to be able to search them on microfilm. Thanks Mandy

Just a thought-
Would it be worthwhile checking who lived at the address in 1939 in case the childrens mother was there before she knew your dad.

You could then see if any Eric/Ann were born to the persons living there.

Mandy,

Any children would have to take the mother's legal surname at the time they were born. If she were previously married, this means they would take her married surname.

Clearly your father didn't register the children, as we can find no Hagues.

I agree that the presence of Anthony makes it unlikely that it is the correct Eric and Ann, assuming that the recollections of your cousin and the mention from your Mother of only Eric and Ann are correct.

As your father did not marry the mother, but married subsequently, then the most likely explanation, surely, is that she is already married? With no Hague on the birth certificate, then her maiden and married name look the most probable.

There is the possibility that Eric and/or Ann are second names - my sister was only known by her registered first name for a few months before everyone used her second name.

We still have not explored the Stephenson/Smith births, but that looks like an even bigger family, so also would be ruled out because of the extra siblings.

I think the steady search of the newspapers will have to continue.

We have checked the electrol role from 1930-1940 and 1945 -191947 to look for any children born to the residents called Eric and Ann with no luck. We could rule a lot of people out straight away as we all lived down Clyde Street, this is we're Dumbarton Avenue is. as my older sister was born 1947 and remembers a lot of the people herself. I think it unlikely th 2 children would be using there second names if they even had any, We're left with looking through more Hull Daily Mails for their photograph I think! Thank you Mandy

jax Report 29 Jun 2013 22:10

You would not find the children on the electoral roll for those years...they would have had to be 21 to be on it....now of course it is 18

Steppingstone Report 29 Jun 2013 22:17

I was looking for a possible mother for Eric on the electrol roles and to see we're my dad was living during these years. Thanks Mandy
