The gro ref is for births marriages and deaths and are held at the General Register Office Southport . The GRO ref is their filing ref so they can locate any certificate using the ref one quotes when ordering a certificate .

There were different ways they indicated when a child was adopted according to the birth years and the method they used at the time .

One way was to put a small s against the page nos to indicate only a small version of the birth cert would be issued which wouldn't show any info on the mums name .

Anthony ,s ref doesn't have a small s against his page ref on the GRO record BUT it does depend how adoption was recorded in the 1960's

If you are actually related, and think that this boy may have been adopted..........add yourself to the contact register

I'm sure I replied to this one... Must not have sent it.. Sorry... Yes I'm looking into that.. I noticed just yesterday that there is a facility to do that with the registers.. Thank you Reggie

Update:
Anthony was adopted, don't know anything else yet, I am looking into maybe using a specialist agency to trace him but wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped me... I have found the birth mother and spoke to her, not sure she told me the whole truth but obviously that's her prerogative.

Once again thank you.. It's great that these websites are around.. The information shared is fantastic

To start the search you NEED to purchase his birth certificate to VERIFY it says ADOPTED.

If you can not get his date of birth from his birth mother, you may have enough data to use her full name. Of course you need to use the index data if ordering from the main registry

Name: LAKIN, Anthony P
Registration district: Sheffield
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1965
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Lakin
Volume no:2D
Page no:441

IF you live in SHEFFIELD
you would be better to go to the office & fill in the form

it is at the back of the Town Hall. ( where in the past you paid the Council rates )

OR £10

on-line
https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-copy-certificates/birth.html

NOTE they are not requiring the date of birth <<<<<

I have ordered his birth cert.. That's how I found out he'd been adopted... Apparently it says that on his cert... So just waiting for that to arrive... Then I will look into the register and adding our name to it.. Or a letter to his adoption file..
