Yes Stephen is older than John, could be as much as four years according to photos. It appears that they did not return to Africa as planned as they were frequent visitors to other members of the family for some years.

I think you will have to do as Shirley mentioned and find out if he was living with anyone in 1996 if he had a wife it may be easier to trace them.

I have had a lot of help with Electoral rolls and Stephen was living with Jayne L Knight. They married in 1998 at Birmingham, her maiden name was Padbury. I have not sent for the certificate being short of funds.

Those electoral years won't be online

They will be at the local records office or main library for the area of the address you have

Edit looks like the place they are held is closed now to sept

Thanks Shirley, I will continue looking in the hope that "something will turn up".

I have phoned the splendid new library in Birmingham. They have the electoral rolls for 1996 but I have to go there to look at them. As I am 80, don't go far and live on the south coast that idea is out. I despair of ever finding Stephen/Steven.

Many thanks to those kind people who have tried to help me.

Hello Susan, it could be worth changing your title to ask for a Birmingham ER lookup - that way someone living local may be willing to go for you.

Have you googled the address you have - see if it shows up as selling recently on the Zoopla website?

Susan Report 28 Jun 2014 11:49

I have googled the address and found the house, 3 beds, 2 bathrooms. The flat next door was for sale or sold. Looks a nice place.
I am new to this, what's a Birmingham ER lookup and how do I chance my title. I find it all very confusing!!!

I have now discovered, with help, that Stephen Knight was born Stephen Ashdown in January 1953. His mother Doris Irene Chambers married Sidney Jack Ashdown in 1945 at Bombay, India and returned to England in 1946 under the heading RAF nominal rolls so I am thinking that it was a Service marriage.
Doris and Stephen travelled to Port Said in 1955 and I have found no record of Stephen returning to England.

Have you put Stephen, John and Doris in your tree on here, and have you looked to see if they are in anyone's tree and tried to make contact with them?

The information of the family travelling to Britain in 1960 without Stephen - as he was 7 then he could have travelled earlier to be sent to boarding school.
It seems unlikely if they knew they were also coming to Britain, but children were sent back with other families as escorts to go to school.

I have found Doris and Stephen Ashdown (2) travelling to Port Said in 1955. To join Jack Knight?? I have not found Stephen returning either as Ashdown or Knight.

Stephen is found!! with a lot of help with electoral rolls but John Nigel Knight is still missing. Stephen lost touch with him several years ago, the last place he knows John was living was Dubai. It's beyond me! he could be anywhere.

I found Stephen living at the address in Birmingham where he has been for over twenty years. He spent most of his young life at boarding school which is why he was not with his mother and stepfather when they returned from Africa. John Nigel Knight was born in Africa and the last Stephen knew about him was that he was living and working in Dubai. This was several years ago and he could be any where now!!
