Wow! Thank you Mavis. I had worked out that she must have gone to Bede's and spent an hour the other night trawling through records without success.

Thank you Rose. Just looked at the grave of Edna, Vera's sister, and her husband in LA.
Drove past this cemetery last October when I was in LA myself.

Lynne,

The Bournemouth must be the correct Fred as the date of birth matches with Edna.

Becausse children in a school in Hamburg always came into the classroom wearing strips of wood- tied with string- as shoes, and in many cases were barefooted. Miss Vera Sutherland of Woodville Crescent, Sunderland their teacher asked them why they were not wearing shoes. The reply was always the same "We cannot get any".
Miss Sutherland who has been teaching in Germany for more than year, was so moved by the children's plight that she wrote to her parents asking for either second hand or partly worn footwear.
On Saturday she received several pairs of shores from her mother, who has collected them from friends, and intended distributing them amongst the children this morning.
"The youngsters will be delighted" Miss Sutherland told her parents over the telephone last night. "Some of them do not even know what shoes are."

Lynne you said this death was not Fred

Name: Frederick John Sutherland
Birth Date: 7 Dec 1919
Date of Registration: Aug 1995
Age at Death: 75
Registration district: Bournemouth
Inferred County: Hampshire
Register Number: B11D
District and Subdistrict: 4271B
Entry Number: 49

but there was no other Frederick J Sutherland birth registered in 1919 or 1920

so this would have to be an immigrant Fred if not yours ... and that seems rather unlikely

and there seems to be no record of your Fred travelling to Canada at least before 1960

re the findagrave info about Edna, it says:

Birth: Dec. 7, 1919
Death: Aug. 12, 2006 Las Vegas

so that's the matching birthdate

this is her marriage that the person who posted that memorial at findagrave could not identify:

Marriages Dec 1944
GORDON Royal G Sutherland Sunderland 10a 1523
SUTHERLAND Edna L Gordon Sunderland 10a 1523

Lynne

Lynne Report 8 Nov 2015 12:39

Thank you for that information; I have spoken to Fred's son and was surprised that he had died in Bournemouth.

I also now how more information about Royal and Edna having met their grandson.

Many thanks

This post is about Stephen Owers Sutherland. I have had a researcher trying to find Stephen.
We have been told he was adopted and died aged 56 from cirrhosis of the liver. We aren't allowed to know anything else because of data protection.
Strangely although he was born in Torquay it says his birth place was London on his death certificate apparently. He was adopted in London.
There is still a piece of the jigsaw missing.
Not sure what else to do. We have ground to a halt. The researcher has written to the nearest identified relative but the letter has been returned.
I have trawled Ancestry and have come up with a number of possibles.
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions.
Thanks Lynne :-(

Kay????

Kay???? Report 10 Mar 2016 20:18

Lynne,,,,,if your researcher was one who advertises themselves as such then I would question their means of identifying "Stephen" as his adoption details would not be released to a family researcher as they need to meet the required field as set out by the relevant department.

So what name did he die under and who was the informant?

Rose

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Mar 2016 23:14

Are we inferring that you don't know the name he died under but somehow know his cause of death? seems odd ...

'it says his birth place was London on his death certificate *apparently*'

why 'apparently', who has the certificate and why can't you see it?

(on the other hand it might not be quite necessary to include his cause of death in this thread since it doesn't help in finding him)

who told you he was adopted and died at age 56?

if you have his birth certificate / know his exact date of birth, it's a simple matter to search deaths at Ancestry by exact date of birth, for the year of death, which would be 2004 (1948+56) unless he died in January before his birthday (in which case it would be 2005), or the info is inaccurate

Ancestry shows 366 people born in Jan 1948 who died in 2004, about half of whom would be women, and there are some duplicates

the exact date of birth should narrow that number sufficiently so that for the few who are left, you could look for birth records to match, in a process of elimination

there would likely be so few with the matching birthdate in surrounding years as well that it would not be a lengthy process to extend the search a little on either side of 2004

if you don't have Ancestry access we could help with that search process

We keep feeling that the missing piece of the puzzle is the things you know but are not mentioning, I think!

(for info, of the five men with 'Stephen' in their names, born in Jan 1948 who died 2004, there are birth records for all five)

Lynne Report 12 Mar 2016 23:54

Many thanks to all who have offered suggestions. Just to clarify the situation....we spent many years looking for Stephen who was adopted from the now defunct Knightsbridge Adoption Agency - the records were scattered and the retired social worker who was looking into it for us had to give up in the end.
Last year we decided to start again and have been working with a wonderful lady from a recognised agency (outstanding Ofsted reports) who traced Stephen's adoption.
Due to data protection laws mainly she wasn't allowed to give us Stephen's adopted name.
On the death certificate the person who notified the death was given as his sister; our social worker wrote to the sister who she had ascertained was still alive but had no response.
With further digging she located the sister's husband who appeared to be in sheltered accommodation. Another letter was sent; this letter was opened but returned to sender. They obviously do not want any contact.
There is very little we are able to do now. We know that he died aged 56, that his sister notified the death and that he died from Cirrhosis of the liver and associated problems. This information was allowed to be given to us for medical reasons.
I have done the obvious i.e. gone on Ancestry and put in all the information I have. I have now received 4 death certificates with another 2 on order of possible men who could be Stephen.
As stated there is always the possibility that he died in 2005 just before his 57th birthday and I am following that up as well.
It is quite frustrating to have got so far - there is a still a piece of the jigsaw missing.
My ex-husband, Stephen's twin brother, has a birth record which is the same as everybody elses and he was also adopted so there seems little mileage in that route.
The only additional information is that on the death certificate Stephen's place of birth was given as London (where he was adopted) and not Torquay where he was born.
I hope that clarifies some if not all of the situation. Thanks for the interest.

I still find it a bit suspect that this unrelated researcher was able to access this information. She has revealed ALL the details from the death certificate apart from his name. I have to wonder if these details are actually true.

Based on what she's told you, and the date of birth I found using Google, I only see 1 death without an obvious matching birth record: Brian Robbins.
