Re working for GPO once married - my Mum was a GPO telephonist and had to stop working when she married in 1951.

Just another possibility? Normally a birth with mmn being the same indicates an unmarried woman, but not always so. Found this marriage which, although in a completely different area, could fit the time frame.

Remember it was during the war and people did move around quite a bit then. Also, if Ethel was married and her husband had died she may not have been able to raise a child on her own - or maybe it was a wartime romance and husband didn't know?

Hi ,sadly I have had no joy in my search so far but will never give up ,I do have a question ...on Mums birth cert it states that Ethel was working as a Clerical Officer for the GPO does anyone know where I can find information as I looked on GPO records and cannot find anything ,I have also been told that once married ladies couldn't work for the GPO ....is this true ...if so this confirms Ethel was single at the time of Mums birth ??

Although not relevant to your searches, houses in rural areas were frequently named rather than numbered. This was certainly still happening in the 1950s. All the properties on the 'new build' road we moved to were given names by their first owners, not numbers. Those names are on the Land Registry registered Deeds.

Hi Kay,I firstly got in touch with Farnham who the directed me to Guildford as it was Farnham Juvenile court where Mums adoption hearing was held , I spoke to Guildfordcourt then ee-mailed all information I had which I was able to get from the application and order (this was handed over to my Mum after my Grandfather died, (apparently he was not supposed to of had these 2 documents)this was how I was able to get a copy of Mums birth cert !

Did you apply to Guildford or Farnham for any paperwork.?

Just checked Mums adoption order , my Grandparents house in Farnham at the time of her adoption also had a name not number for the address so maybe quite common then (maybe clutching at straws again but iI'm hopeing I'm not) :-)

I managed to find her and have sent a message :-) fingers crossed, i think i have come to the conclusion that in some way Stoneleigh may be the name of a house, I know perhaps daft to think but my Grandparents (Mums adoptive parents) full address is on the adoption order also there house here had a name this was used when writing down there Andreas they never put down the number , maybe strange I don't know!

The thing is that there is absolutely no reason to think 'Stoneleigh' was connected with a church! the fact that a former vicar was living there when he died (and I still think it was an area, not a house) doesn't make it a vicarage :-)

Hi, just had a look at the houses shown in the link. The terraced houses on the right look to be from the 1970's onwards. The style of the houses on the left seems to indicate that they were more recently built.

If you can find out which local authority covers this area it should be possible to speak to someone in the planning department who MAY tell you roughly when the houses were built. In an area that has been redeveloped more houses are usually built than pulled down so perhaps house numbering may hold a clue. Also I think that you have to have some sort of official permission i.e. planning or some such before a house can be demolished.

You say you tried Farnham Court but what about Guildford?

The answer to your question with reference to the houses is yes, they were built after 1945 they are simular to my house which was built in the 1950s :-)
