Adam Corrie (pig/ peat dealer) marries Mary Burns- they have daughter, Mary in 1819.

The theory is that daughter Mary has illegitimate son, Adam, who lives with her father as his son (but we know from death cert that it is his grandson).

The same Adam (pig/ peat dealer) marries Isabella Briggs in 1848. He dies in 1867- Adam, grandson is present at death.

Adam's daughter Mary goes on to marry James Wells- and has children James and Mary, and dies in 1883- parents listed as Adam Currie, pig dealer, and Mary (maiden surname Burns). Mary's daughter, Mary Currie is present at death.

Mary's daughter, Mary Wells, marries William Currie in 1874. William is the son of Adam Currie (farmer), and Isabella Grierson

its an old style marriage cert and just says labourer after his name..was thinking more of the Grierson marriage being red herring...but am having change of heart....on the 1851 census the adam currie listed as peat dealer and his wife Isabella living in isle of man road Dumfries..a name not used here for many years...have an adam in their household the correct age..10..listed as adams son...but they did not marry till well after his birth year, so maybe his son, but not isabellas?....because all these curries actually lived in very close proximity to each other in Dumfries...very close....am hoping theres not a "closer" connection :-0...we are really grateful for all your assistance

Gritty

Gritty Report 12 Apr 2015 15:18

Not sure what you mean about discounting marriages? The Adam Corrie/ Isabella Briggs marriage should not be discounted! The Currie/ Corrie variation is normal within older records. Isabella Briggs was Adam's second wife.

I haven't had a chance to have a look at any info for Mary yet - but if you look at the 1861 census that I posted above- Adam, is at the same address as Mary Wells and her children.- So it is likely you are on the right track. On Mary's marriage to James Wells does it list her father as Adam- pig dealer, or peat dealer?

carol Report 12 Apr 2015 13:07

hi again...have been on pc all morning trying catch up on your info...don't kow if I am making it more confusing for myself...I have found a mary corrie(currie) daughter of the adam and mary burns marriage....and she was born in 1819 as you had found...I think she went on to marry james wells on 27/1/1843,,,and they had a daughter mary wells in 1846....she then married (unbelievably if I am right) William currie!!,,,,son of the adam currie and Isabella GRIERSON marriage...I think totally different families though!!!....would love to hear if you think I am correct!!... :-S

carol

carol Report 12 Apr 2015 11:53

fyi...we had found two marriages which we had wrongly, I now think. discounted..adam currie and Isabella Grierson 29/1/1846 in holywood Dumfries..and adam and Isabella briggs in Dumfries 7/3/1848...its complicated by a misspelling of CURRIE as CORRIE which we have had trouble with in other searches...the briggs marriage is the one we have as corrie on the cert.....Grierson one is currie :-S

carol

carol Report 12 Apr 2015 11:26

my goodness...how impressive is that!!!....we have been round and round in circles re adam born c 1840....but then we are amateurs and beginners at this...we use scotlands people site for researching most things and have been lucky to find all the things we have...only been doing it for 2/3weeks so far...the search will continue! :-)

Gritty Report 12 Apr 2015 10:59

Adam snr's first marriage was likely to be to Mary Burns (haven't found date for it yet), children of this marriage (all born Dumfries) were:

MARY 1819<<<<<<<<<<<< possible mother of Adam born c1840??
Janet 1824
Agnes 1826 (Nancy is a form of Agnes)
John 1828
John-Ann 1830 (female)

Agnes married John Kerr in 1863- listing her father as Adam Corrie, Pig dealer, and Mary (maiden surname Burns)- deceased

Gritty

Gritty Report 12 Apr 2015 08:28

Adam (born 1801) was married previously. Adam jnr may have been his daughter's illegitimate child?

This appears to be Adam snr in 1861:

1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Welling, St Michaels, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Adam Corrie Head Married Male 64 1797 Pig Dealer Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Isabella Corrie Wife Married Female 60 1801 - Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Agness Corrie Grand Daughter - Female 7 1854 Scholar Dumfriesshire, Scotland
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Isabella dies later in 1861- her parents are listed as surname Briggs (no forenames) and she is listed as married to Adam Corrie, peat dealer. Adam (husband was present at death)

Adam dies in 1867- listed as pig dealer, widower of Elizabeth Briggs. Adam Corrie, GRANDSON, is listed as present at death.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

marriage for Adam and Isabella -not until 1848, but note he is listed as widower.

First name(s) Adam
Last name Corrie
Marriage year 1848
Marriage date 07 Mar 1848
Marriage place Dumfries,Dumfries,Scotland
Spouse's first name(s) Isabella
Spouse's last name Briggs
Place Dumfries
County Dumfriesshire
Record set Scotland Marriages 1561-1910

From image: Adam Corrie, Peat Monger & Pig Dealer, Widr, to Isabella Briggs
-------------------------------------------------------

The fact that Adam Corrie, GRANDSON is listed as present at death of Adam snr, and that Adam Senr was a widower when he married Isabella Briggs, would make me concentrate my efforts on finding any possible children of Adam snr. to see if he has a daughter Mary.
