Hi folks,
A few years ago I spoke to my Dad for the first time in roughly 38 years (I am now 41). My Mother and Father divorced soon after I was born so I am guessing this would be late 1974 or some time in 1975.

My Dad said that before he met my mother he had a daughter who he signed over and was adopted by his ex wife or partner's husband. So clearly I have a half sister somewhere, and I am keen to trace her, if possible.

Dad - Peter Dickson (born 1948)

Can anyone advise how I would start going about my search?

Many thanks,

Jamie Dickson

Was this a child by a previous marriage for him?

What area are we looking at?

Hi folks,

Wow that was quick! Yes I think it was from a previous marriage, in fact, I'm sure of it because it shocked me. He did tell me the name but I honestly can't remember. Unfortunately I am no longer in touch with my Dad so I thought I'd go it alone and try and find her myself.

I really don't know. I doubt it because he didn't ever look after me when he split from my Mum.

Well I've just discovered that my Dad had a middle name beginning with E. Low and behold I just did a search under marriages for Peter E Dickson and he got married in Haringey in 1965, which is the same place he married my Mum in 1972. I wonder if its him/her! Seems he married a Gillian I Howe. Surely this can't just be a coincidence. So I guess that I now look for Gillian and go from there?

There's no Peter E Dickson born in 1948 however. There's one born in 1947 in Reading.

If you look on FreeBMD you can find the daughter born in 1965.

Next step is to find another marriage for Gillian.

Hi Rose that could be him :-)

If Gillian was his first wife it means he got married at 18, which I suppose is young but quite doable in those days, especially if one is pregnant. Just making an assumption.

I found this. Wood Green is in Haringey so i wonder if this is his first wife? This would have made her 16 when she married my Dad. The scandal! So I wonder how I can find out if this lady had any children - can anyone help?

Rose - you said you found the daughter, born 1965. Unfortunately I can't find anything. Perhaps I'm not entering the correct information. I suppose I'm close bit haven't got the gold just yet.

The birth in 1965 has an S against the page nos indicating the child was adopted the S means only a small certificate would be is issued if a birth cert was applied for
