Out going passenger lists from uk are only published on sites up to 1960,,, Katy,,,,,but that is for sea travel only,,,,,,they do not include those that flew, and many did so wont show on any lists.

a cousin flew to Ausralia in 1958 as a £10 pom, so isnt on the passenger sailing lists....

I have no idea what yeAr they left or how or when they came back but I'm assuming my dad came back on his own and his mum and sister lived in Canada

Up to 1962 2 year national service was in place in the uk and if he hadnt taken up residence in another country he may have got his call up papers and had to return.? just an idea.

With my dad dying when I was so young it's hard to know. When and why he left his dad was in the army and died but I'm not sure when he died if it was in the army or after my mum tries to remember as much as she can but it was a long time ago

One of my dads cousins do you mean? And what's a £10 Pom is that like a cheap ticket sorry I only just noticed this bit of info I must of missed it earlier

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Jul 2015 23:58

Up till 1966 Rhodesia was part of the British Commonwealth and came under the uk crown.

£10 pom was the given name by Australians to those who got assisted passage for only £10 to migrate to Australia as they were badly in need of skilled workers..Australia was one of the many countries after the war that people migrated to,,,,,Canada being one and South Africa ,along with New Zealand.

No a cousin within our family,,,,,,he chose to fly to OZ and went for £10,,,,,,a £10 pom,,,British people are called Pom or pommys in OZ........ :-D.

Katy Report 31 Jul 2015 01:21

Oh right Interesting I wonder what made them choose the countries they did , how different things were back then so did people migrate after the war incase another war broke out so they couldn't be called back? Or was it for the work? I should read up more on this .

Kay???? Report 31 Jul 2015 08:17

NZ,.AUS, Canada and Rhosesia all had a policy of a 2 year army stint,,,,at 18 they were drafted,,,,,Uk it was called national service.--compulsary, with some exceptions as not all had to do it.

The early 60s in some parts of SA was not a good time and many migrants returned or maybe moved on to new pastures,,,,,,,

have a read up and see if it throws up any probable answers.

Most migrated for a life style that they couldnt achive in UK.......they were offered a honey pot.some returned because they were homesick,,,,some just couldnt settle into the new countries ways, some never got the golden egg or the swimming pool in the backgarden......!

BBQ wasnt heard of in UK,,,,the nearest thing was a sausage cooked on a camp fire on a camping holiday.... :-D :-D :-D.
