Just to clarify, when I said the phone book, I meant to get an exact address (and also a phone number, of course). I would generally agree about writing first, but this isn't like a child calling a biological parent sort of thing.

I got your message, Lainey, and I will give it a shot as soon as I reboot this stupid new version of Firefox that I accidentally installed ...

Thanks for sending me the info, Rose and Lainey, but I have flaked out.

I didn't realize you already knew the town.

192.com's search function won't tell you that, but using google to search for
"jane x smith" 192.com
will most often find a more detailed record that gets you the city name
and then you can use BT online to get possibles
and then use the postcode from the BT online results to search for the surname with that postcode at 192.com
to see whether your people come up

but BT online, as you already know, I now see, doesn't produce anything for any of those names -- it does have a couple with matching initials, but when checked against the 192.com results for the postcodes, they don't match your people.

And for the least common of the surnames in the household, D__, there are no listings in that city at all.

So many people are ex-directory or have only cellphones these days that this trick is less useful than it once was.

Lainey, I think I would pay the 192.com fee to get the full record info for the household.

Unbelievably, Firefox is crashing again. I'll reboot and take another look.

Lainey, I was just saying to Rose by PM ...

I'd try Facebook messaging the other person I suggested too.

But as Rose says, maybe a Friend request to them all, as well?

Could you put a message on your own Facebook page to explain the friend requests, so if they get the request and check your profile, they'll know the purpose?

RESULT! Good afternoon all. I have great news. I sent messages through Facebook and this morning got a reply from Aunty Sheila's daughter who actually lives with her. They left Orpington in 2016 and moved to Milton Keynes. We have spoken on the phone today at length. Aunty Sheila has been in tears. They have been trying to find us all for years. She is now 85 years old and through her tears has asked to be taken to her brother Charlie who lives less than an hour away in Peterborough.

She was able to tell me that Reg got married on 19 November 1960, she thinks in Ireland. She also told me that her Mother was born in Ireland. Date of birth unknown. She worked in nursing. She was married but her husband was a Motorbike courier and whilst out doing his rounds in the countryside was killed in an accident. She thinks he may have been a Fry.

We are getting there slowly but surely.

Well that's all rather stupendous. Congratulations on making the senior family members so happy. And say hello from us!

Now for Reg, when you say Ireland, do we understand Eire? Unfortunately there is a resaonable likelihood that he is deceased ...

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Apr 2018 16:23

Going right back to your opening post, you said Reg was last heard of in the Aldershot Hampshire area.

When was that, please? Would it have been before or after his marriage?

Apologies if already answered elsewhere in this long thread.
And not sure why I'm asking anyway - just clutching at straws!

As far as Ancestry is concerned, Irish marriages only go up to 1958. Pity he didn't marry a couple of years earlier!

Luckylainey

Luckylainey Report 24 Apr 2018 11:13

Joonie, I think there is a strong possibility that Reg may have passed away. If still alive he would be 79 years old. I really don't know if he would be in NI or Southern Ireland(Eire). Although his sister(85 years old) seems to think it could be NI. Surely if that were the case he would have shown up somewhere in the ancestry records?

ArgyllGran. My Husband recalls as a young man in the 1980's he always believed his Uncle Reg lived in or around Aldershot.

Have to go and get ready for work, so will pop back later. have a good day ladies :-)

ArgyllGran Report 24 Apr 2018 11:19

On Ancestry, the Irish Civil Registration Deaths Index only goes up to 1958, and Select Catholic Death and Burial Registers only go to 1992.

And he may still be alive.

Hello, I just wanted you lovely people to know, My husband and I went to meet Aunty Sheila, her daughter and Son In Law. Michael Fry's daughter (Cousin Sheila) and her husband David on Thursday. It was so emotional. We then took Sheila to see her Brother Charlie who she had not seen in 59 years. We had an amazing family reunion and party with the youngest being 6 weeks old and the eldest 85 years old. It was just incredible. We did not feel like strangers at all, it felt like family. We have all bonded and cannot wait to meet up again soon. We are still searching for Reg, and we know we will get there. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart xx

It now appears that Marjorie was possibly Adelaide Marjorie Humphrey who married Albert Fry in Ticehurst Sussex in 1920. According to their marriage certificate her Father was Albert Humphrey deceased, an Engine Driver. One of the witnesses was Gertrude Alice Humphrey. a sister perhaps? I cannot find any record of Adelaide, Gertrude or their Father Albert before 1920. I am currently still searching for Uncle Reggie.

A 1920 marriage means there could be several more children.
