Hi, this is a long shot but trying to find Edward Fletcher born in the 4th quarter of 1947 in Middlesbrough.
Unfortunately he was adopted so might have different surname, like I said it’s a long shot but any ideas where to luck would be appreciated
Thank you

Susan

Susan Report 28 May 2018 11:39

Sorry it’s me again
I do know his mothers name was Doris and her maiden name was Brentley.
Edward was born to Doris while she was married to someone else.
He is my husbands Uncle.
Thanks again for any clues.

Have you looked in members trees to see if he is listed

Without his new name I,m afraid no one can help

You could add your contact details on the national adoption register and if he goes looking your contact details would be given to him

You could also add a note against his birth GRO record on freebmd . Should he look for his birth record then he will see your contact details /note

Thank you Shirley, I have sent for his birth certificate so I might get more details from that.
Will try your advice, thanks again for your time

It was a different system in 1945 the small s against the page nos was a later way of showing adoption
It meant that the GRO would only issue a short version of the cert that doesn't show mothers details

You may find the one for Edward will have an annotation on it as adopted

Thank you Mallon and Shirley,
I obviously haven’t looked at the date properly :-(
I’ll let you know what the certificate tells me, not a lot by the sounds of it lol

Just a thought though not seeing a marriage for Doris to a mr fletcher ??

And the registration is only in the one surname

Susan

Susan Report 28 May 2018 17:05

I only sent for the certificate out of curiosity as my husband has only just found out about this birth.
I thought the birth records only ever showed the mothers name, or am I wrong?
Where did you search for the marriage?
Don’t think they will find the birth certificate as I said he was born in 1947, my fault I forgot about the 2 years either side lol
Thanks for the help and can I apologise to Malyon, I did put correct name but it changed spelling ??

Hi Shirley, found the marriage of Doris and John Fletcher,
1931 only she has her maiden name as Hawthorne, her mother was married twice, to a Bentley, who was her father and to a Hawthorne, don’t know why she changed from one to another.

Ah that's why i couldn't find the marrige

The birth of Edward is just as fletcher mmn brentley so no father will be on the cert unless she wrongly gave her husband as the father

Took a look at the written register page and the writing is a bit flourished. Think that's a mistranscription and that's John not joan

Not everyone shows on the l939 register - it depends on their age, I received this from FindmyPast this week - Liz

If we have received proof of death, a person under 100 years old will be open on the Register.

Her mother married a Brentley in 1902 then Hawthorne in 1911 the birth was the following quarter

She was reg as Hawthorne but maybe somewhere along the line she found her father was actually mr Brentley She used both surmanes as her maiden name on her children's birth registering
