Sent for Ellen Clarke's death cert in the hope that a daughter or son would be mentioned on it. Arrived this morning and disappointing as no mention of a son or daughter, just a Nephew. Also, the address had changed for 2 Cowal Sreet to 154 Crown Street. Owen mc Fadden, Nephew, was the informant.
Maybe Thomas and Ellen did not have children. That leaves Mary and I don't have any information to say that she married. I have not found a death for her so far. :-(

ArgyllGran Report 2 May 2019 11:03

As Ellen was living at 154 Crown Street both before and after Thomas's death, that was clearly their family home.

That suggests that either they had separated and Thomas had gone to live with his parents before he died, or else that he just happened to die at his parents' home although his home address was 154 Crown Street.

Presumably you have investigated these marriages? I don't see deaths in Scotland for any of these women.

CLARKE MARY
BRADY PETER
1920
644/14 68
Maryhill

CLARKE MARY BRIDGET
MCGINLEY THOMAS
1924
644/14 96
Maryhill

(I know your Mary had no middle name at birth reg, but Bridget might have been added later, as her mother was Irish)

CLARKE MARY
MCBRIDE STEPHEN
1944
644/12 340
Maryhill

And this death ? Apparently an unmarried woman as death not listed under any alternative surname :

CLARKE
MARY
73
1973
607/ 61
Glasgow, Martha St

As you'll know , there are also a number of Mary Clarke deaths indicating the right YOB +/-1, in other parts of Scotland, any of which could be hers.

But of course, she could have gone anywhere for work after 1911, and it's a very common name.

Aspen Report 2 May 2019 14:17

The Stephen McBride is not married to the Mary Clarke that I am looking for. I do have that death certificate and that one is ruled out.
I will see what cert to get from the ones you have mentioned next.
Thomas Clarke was living in 2 Cowal Street 1965. It is interesting that Ellen was in Crown Street in 1971. I wonder was she living with her Nephew?

As shown by the ERs (posted on page 1 of this thread), 154 Crown Street was Ellen's home for many years - from at least 1947 until her death in 1971.

In 1947, Ellen and her sisters Margaret and Bridie were at that address, and then Ellen and Thomas were there until 1962, which is as far as the online Glasgow ERs go.
Presumably they were there until Thomas's death, and after that Ellen continued to live there until her death.

Repeating what I posted earlier -
the fact that Thomas died in Cowal Street suggests that either

(a) not very likely - they had separated and Thomas had gone to live with his parents before he died - some time between 1962 and 1965,
or
(b) he just happened to die at Cowal Street, while his home address was still 154 Crown Street. Perhaps his parents were helping to nurse him.

Does the death cert give Owen McFadden's address?

Aspen

Aspen Report 2 May 2019 21:03

No address for Owen McFadden. Little things like that helps so much. I have no idea of his age or address. Did have a look on Scotlandspeople to see what was there for him.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 May 2019 22:12

It's a pity there's no address. I had hoped we could perhaps figure out whose son he was.

In 1971 he could have been any age from 16 upwards, and might not have been a Glasgow resident in any case.

Going by the info you have given about Thomas's siblings, Mary is the only possibility for his mother if he was a nephew on the Clarke side.
But I don't see a marriage of a Mary Clark/Clarke to a McFadden (or variation of spelling.)

If he was on the Coyle side of the family, again I don't see a likely Coyle/McFadden or similar marriage in Scotland, nor in Ireland, at least not to any of Ellen's known sisters.

Just in case there's any link, I'll throw this random census record in.

There's this family in 1901, with a Coyle boarder, but I don't know if there's any connection or not. If, by some chance, this was the correct Owen, I think the word "nephew" must have been used pretty loosely.

Owen McFadden
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: Owen McFadden
Age: 2
Estimated birth year: abt 1899
Relationship: Son
Father's name: Patrick McFadden
Mother's name: Bridget McFadden
Gender: Male
Where born: Holytown, Lanarkshire
Registration Number: 625/2
Registration district: Holytown
Civil Parish: Holytown
County: Lanarkshire
Address: New Stevenston
ED: 12
Household schedule number: 170
Line: 18
Roll: CSSCT1901_248
Household Members:
Name Age
Patrick McFadden 28 - Ireland
Bridget McFadden 22 - Ireland
Owen McFadden 2 - Holytown
Patrick McFadden 9 Mos - Holytown
Owen McFadden 22 - brother, Ireland
Andrew Coyle 26 - boarder, Ireland, engineer
John McFadden 16 - boarder, Ireland
Charles McGhee 34 - boarder, Ireland

EDIT:

Anyway, that child Owen probably died in 1954:

MCFADDEN
OWEN
54
1954
625/2 15
Holytown

Although there is also this death:

MCFADDEN
OWEN
75
1974
601/ 561
Glasgow, Martha St

There were a few Owen McFaddens born in Dunfanaghy, though none with mms Coyle, as far as I can see.

Mary Clarke that died 1973 and Mary Clarke that married Brady may be of interest. I think I'm might send for the death certificate. :-D

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 May 2019 10:07

Of the two deaths, the 1973 one seems the more likely.

Fingers crossed!

Aspen Report 10 May 2019 11:21

Hurray, it was the correct Mary Clarke. She was not married and address given as 2 Cowal Street. Strange that the sister in law Ellen Clarke was not living in 2 Cowal Street in 1971. It appears that both Annie and Mary were living in 2Cowal Street in 1973.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2019 11:26

Not strange.

Annie and Mary were unmarried and therefore still living with their parents.
[EDIT: no, of course, I'm reminded by Aspen's post below that the parents had died - but Annie and Mary probably inherited it, as the unmarried daughters.].

Ellen was living at 154 Crown Street, where, as already said, she had been since at least 1947.

James [ EDIT: sorry, I meant Thomas! ] just happened to be at his parents' house when he died.

Aspen

Aspen Report 10 May 2019 12:49

2 Cowal Street belonged to the parents, Thomas and Ann, maybe they rented it. Thomas died there in 1930 and Ann in 1952. Now we know that both Annie and Mary were there in 1973, but Annie was in a different address in 1985. We can see that Thomas died there in 1965, but his wife died in 154 Crown Street and that might mean they were separated. Possibly there were no children from that marriage either and that means the Clarke family died out. I was hoping for a descendent. :-( :-(
