According to the Durham on line site Henry Poynton married Ann Fenwick 1870

Surname Forename(s) Year District
POYNTON Henry 1870 Durham Central
FENWICK Ann 1870 Durham Central

Here are the GRO details

Marriages Dec 1870
POYNTON Henry Durham 10a 557
FENWICK Ann Durham 10a 557

and his death

Deaths Dec 1872
Poynton Henry 35 Durham 10a 225

One wonders about Mary Hannah Pointon 2 - Brockley in Sum, Durham, England c1869???? No birth for her in that name

Was she born to a previous marriage?

Porkie_Pie Report 19 Feb 2014 19:08

Looking on the national archives web site and using all combinations for his name spelling and in both forenames Henry and harry i cannot see a medal card with his name on for the Durham light infantry,

People often assume that ancesters from Durham served in the DLI but most never,

There are other Regiments that also have strong links to that part of the country and in most cases men were allocated to the regiments in need of manpower due to heavy losses so they never had the choice of Regiment,

There are some possible service records for his name on ancestry but i don't have subs so cannot look

Mararet, According to the census for him he was born Haswell

Haswell and Murton are in the same registration district

What makes you believe he was in the army in WW1?

abt 60/70% of army WW1 service records where distroyed in WW2 bombings so you may never find any for him,

However medal cards for soldiers were stored at a seperate location so most have survived.

There are some medal cards that could be your Henry Poynton/Pointon but a medal card doen't give info to ID the soldier as YOURS unless you have his regiment and service number

Ancestry have a pension record for a Henry Poynton but it's not your man the age is 15 years out and location is wrong

Do you have a photo of him in uniform? That's about the only way you have a chance to identify his regiment

As Roy says - he might not have served in the Forces.

If the earlier 1911 census is correct, he was work in the Coal Mines. That was an important War Effort occupation. If too many young men enlisted then the country would have ground to a halt. Coal was an important resource to drive the steam engines which powered the factory machines and even some of the older Naval Vessels.
