I thought you found his Thomas's service record on Ancestry over the weekend?

Violet A Hudson is listed on page 2 along with his other children

If you look back through your thread you will see that Cris Ho posted that he is listed on the national archives web site in the royal navy seaman's Navy Records section

Description:Name Hodgson, Thomas
Official Number: 295075
Place of Birth: Ulverston, Lancashire
Date of Birth: 05 January 1881

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/royal-naval-seamen.htm

(Navy Record can be downloaded from above, £3.36)

I saved a copy of his army service record so if you don't have a copy then PM me your email address and i will send you a copy,

The details for the birth of Violet A Hudson are on thomas's service record,

She was born 8/11/1912 acording to his army service record

Is it Thomas hudson's birth cert your thinking of getting?

The details on the GRO index are

Births Mar 1883
HODGSON Thomas Ulverston 8e 812

So the birth was "registered" in the March quarter of 1883 in the name of "Thomas Hodgson" in Ulverston registration district volume 8e and the page number is 812

The birth cert "should" confirm if the James and Ann Hodgson listed on his service record are his parents, It should list his dads occupation and his mothers maiden name plus any other names she had been known by, such as any previous married names, It should also give you an address as to where he was born and who the informant was plus their address

The 1911 census states that Ann Hodgson had been married for 44 years, Their is a marriage in Ulverston 1868 for a James Hodgson to possibly a Ann Topman,

Once you get the birth certificate it should confirm this but it may (not)

One step at a time because as has been said certs are required as confirmation that you are following the correct family,

His entry on the Royal Navy Registers of Seamen gives concerns and an air of doubt as his dob on that record is out by 2 yeas but he may have lied,

His Navy entry says born 5th jan 1881 but Cris Ho posted on page 2

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Thomas Hodgson
Gender:Male
>>>>>>>Birth Date:5 Jan 1883 <<<<<<<<<<<<
Birth Place:Ulverston, Lancaster, England
Baptism Date:4 Feb 1883
Baptism Place:Ulverston, Lancashire, England
Father:James Hodgson
Mother: Ann Hodgson

As i said in my other post, I would on this occation order his birth cert using the GRO index details but because of the doubt it may be best to give his fathers name on the application, then if its the wrong man the GRO will not issue the cert and it should save you money as you should recieve a partial refund? No point paying for a cert thats not your man IF you can avoid it

Roy

Was this the Thomas Hodgson birth cert you were thinking of ordering?

Births Mar 1883
HODGSON Thomas Ulverston 8e 812

Year- 1883
Quarter- Jan-Feb-Mar
Surname- Hodgson
First name- Thomas
Reg district- Ulverston
Volume- 8e
Page- 812

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 26 Feb 2014 11:32

Roy gave you the link to order certificates on-line
……………
You have to register first and they charge £9. 25 including P&P

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
…………

GRO stands for General Regiser Office and is located (I think) in Southport.

Local register offices send copies of all post 1837 bmd registrations to them, which are then assigned a district registration name, volume number and page number.
You need those details to make ordering and despatch easier and quicker.

A free site to find the details is http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

As I’m not too sure which certs you were thinking of ordering (once you’ve collected enough pennies from the back of the sofa) one picked out from the thread is analysed.

Births Dec 1912 (>99%)
-----------------------------------------------------
Hudson Violet A Hyde Orsett 4a 1223

Birth registered 1912
Quarter Oct-Nov-Dec
Surname Hudson
First names Violet A
Mother's maiden surname - Hyde
Reg District Orsett
Volume 4a
Page 1223

Once you’ve registered with the GRO site, on one of the early pages, towards the bottom it asks you if you know the reg number. At that point click ‘yes’. Then you use the details to complete the form. Only give exactly what is recorded on the index – nothing more, nothing less.

I would say because of the info documented on his Army service records that his bith cert is definatly one you will need but i am concerned that his Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services record say's Date of Birth: 05 January 1881

I cannot see a birth listed for that name in 1881+/- 1 year in Ulverston

The birth we found is for the first quarter 1883 so his "birth-day" could be correct

That date is 2 years out from the one listed on the GRO index and his age on other documents,

He may have simply lied about his age when he joined the Navy, I think if it was me i would order the cert using the GRO reference details but Add his fathers name (only) James Hodgson, That way if it's is the wrong cert they will not supply it and i'm not sure but i think you get a partial refund? I could be wrong (It's a while since i got it wrong)

Porkie_Pie Report 24 Feb 2014 20:17

Daniel, When you are ready to order any certificates the site to use is the GRO or local registry officers, NEVER order from any other source,

Some local officers don't supply certs for family history but i believe most do, Your best and cheapest option is to use the GRO at Southport you can order online and just using the info on the GRO index,

You have to register first and they charge £9. 25 including P&P

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

When your ready to order your first cert if you need any guidance then just ask,

As for getting further back it's easy to head off in the wrong direction and follow the wrong family without confirming the details found, by all means continue to search but keep an open mind about what you find because without some certs you could end up following the wrong family,

Even the most experianced researcher will tell you WE have all done just that when we first started out, It can be expensive in both time and money if you don't get it right,

Chris and Roy thank you for everything you have done, I keep looking over it all and seems to be correct, I am putting some money by so I can order certificates and stuff but times are hard at the minute. I was wondering if you would help me some more in finding few bits out and going further as I'm stuck, if you have few 5 mins here and there would be fantastic and much appreciated, if not no worrie as you have done alot already. Thomas's mother and father was James Hodgson and Ann, I can't find Ann's maiden name??? Thought it might be Hudson but can only find a James Hodgson and Ann Hudson wedding in 1891 she was 18 and it would make James 45 so doubt it. But in the 1901 census James and Ann Hodgson were living together and in the 1911 Ann was living with her son Joseph. Think James Hodgson dad is a Robert??? Can't find wether James died or that was his wedding to Ann Hudson which I why Thomas changed to Hudson Hudson even though he was born in 1883, but looking think he might of changed it from being on that vessel in 1901 census, but I found out that people can change them for a number of reasons. Just trying to piece stuff together, what's Ann's maiden name and why Thomas changed his surname well added to it really, can't believe my name Hudson originated from Hodgson, so I'm really a Hodgson lol. Can't believe some stuff you found especially thomas Hudson dying in 1916 and his stone, my grandad was so happy and gob smacked.

Thanks again dan hudson

Because of what you guys have done I have sat on ancestry for a few hours as its free this weekend and think I've gone even further and goin Thomas's dad and mum, James Hodgson and Ann Hudson, which is where thomas got hodgson hudson from, which then I found a marriage cert from 1879 stating both thier fathers names thomas Hodgson and James Hudson. Think James Hodgson might of been married before to a Jane Patterson before Ann as James was about 35 and Ann was 18 when they married. Just trying to confirm thier births, when and where.

Thank you truly amazing and interesting

Just checking on the Vessel Pembroke at Chatham and it looks like Pembroke was the name of the barracks in the dockyard

Edit,, Just found this
Prior to the 1903 accommodation had been in three hulks, one of which was HMS Pembroke. The name was transferred to the new barracks 1st May, 1903. The barracks closed in 1961
