I have been trying to find any army records of my uncle George Knowles. George was born in 1916 in Longton, Preston, Lancashire and married Lily Woan in 1940. He served in the army during WW11 and at some point was stationed in North Africa but I can’t find any records. Because he was born in Lancashire I would assume that he joined a Lancashire regiment. I don’t know if he was a volunteer.
Any help would be appreciated.

WW2 records are not on line as they are still with the MOD. You can see how to order them here:-

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

The records cost £30, you have to supply proof of your relationship, and they can take several months to arrive.

You will probably also be required to provide a copy of his death cert

Is their son alive?

Yes his son is alive so I will get in touch with him although he doesn’t seem to know much about his army service and isn’t really interested in the family tree.
Thank you for reply8ng. It was very helpful.
