Thank you oh so much. It's looking more like you found our Bertie for the dates mentioned. Besides the mention of a George that could be either his brother or father, he also had a brother Walter Smith and a nephew James Smith. His sister Rosina (Chatfield Smith) married a Walter Neaves and recorded as living at Woodside Green in the 1911 Census.

If our Bertie was in the Army it looks as though it would have been before 1918.
