Thanks for that, I have tried installing Chrome but an error came up so couldn't have it, although I must say I didn't like Chrome when I installed it before so got rid.
I have searched my Control Panel to see where 'Compatibilty' change is but
could not locate it, I am having trouble now with this page, it keeps freezing,so I'm off.

Porkie_Pie Report 19 Aug 2012 20:41

Compatibility view is not in your control panel,

It's on your browser

If the browser your having problems with has a icon that looks like a piece of torn paper at the end of the address bar then that version has recognised that the page may not be displayed as it should,

Click on that icon or click on tools then compatibility view, you can switch between these at any time

Oh come on Genes and those who are trying to tell us try this that and other to see your tree or whatever as all these things worked perfectly well on the old format before the IT mods started messing around with this site.

So come on Genes get your act together and get back to the old system as you hve certainly BALLS up what you have done now.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 Aug 2012 14:26

Roger, are you suggesting that members should stop trying to help others with problems?

This sites past success is down to the help given the the community boards by other members

Allen Report 20 Aug 2012 16:32

The new format is NOt USER FRENDLY BRING BACK THE OLD IF IT NOT BROKEN DON'T TRY TO BE FANCY, BRING BACK THE OLD, CAN NOT EVEN USE THE TEXT WITHOUT PROBLEMS.

Roger

Roger Report 20 Aug 2012 17:20

Roy it is not the members who have BALLS the site up but the Genes IT mods.

And as it worked prefectly well in all parts before they messed about with it why should we the members have to put up with the mess they have created.

So if these people have created these problems it should be them who fix it - and as they have put a new tree eetc on surely they can if they are as good as they think are should beable to put back the old trees etc as surely they have the back up of the old site.

As I have said before my eyesight is going i.e. I have Retinitus Pigmentoas - no cure, and why should I have to go from 100% screen down to 75% or less well is beyond me - as I could see and do everything in 100% screen before the change over.

IT does not make sence to me.

I use Firefox on two PC's, one has a 16:9 wide screen monitor and W7, the other XP with an older 4:3 monitor

The View other Trees / Dashboard option as mentioned in the first post works fine on both my PC's, so it can't just be down to GR if certain members are having problems and others are fine, otherwise everyone would be affected in the same way, which is not the case.

However, to get the best results with your particular set-up I find it is necessary to set a couple of things.

a) ensure the screen resolution is correct for your particular set-up. My wide screen PC is set to 1920 x 1080, the recommendation for my particular monitor and my older squarer sized monitor to 1280 x 1024. You could also try 1024 x 768 for a 4:3 monitor.

b) secondly, whatever your set-up make sure the page fits the screen. No point in having huge margins at each side. Ctrl and scroll to the largest size without any L / R scroll bars at the bottom. If you want it bigger then you will have to put up with scrolling and also bear in mind certain settings may crop boxes / text so move up or down one position until you are satisfied.

Finally do clear your browser temp files otherwise known as the cache on a regular basis. The GR tree, from experience, requires a fair amount of space for it to download into your browser otherwise some of its functions won't work properly.

I use "My Tree" as my bible and ultimate reference!
It used to be so simple, to dial up a name and go straight to it... fantastic!
But now...What have you done?
The site is just a complete mess, so user unfriendly.
Please Please Please can we revert to the old system!

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 Aug 2012 23:46

William, why do you think that you cannot search for a name in your tree?

The function is still their,

click on the tree you want to search and then click on list, then at the top of the list on the left of the screen their is "Search relations" function, as you type a name in it brings that name to the top, Then click on the name and then click on what ever view you would like to view that relation eg, Immediate family, Full, Ancestors or Descendants plus if you just want to see the details panel for that person then click on the name in the list, then the details panel icon to view their details

I know Roy everything is still there but the old method of looking for them was must more user friendly and easier to do than the new tree.

Why on earth change something that was DEAD easy to use for something which is well useless.

As I said I could see everything without changing the zoom on the old tree.

So come on please make the new tree as simple as the old one was, we are not all experts like some of the IT blokes seem to think we are.

I admire your ability to handle the new tree and - yes, you are right - some are coping.

But most want to ditch this new layout altogether and go back to something really simple. Like pre this disaster, when you could switch your computer on and immediately enjoy looking at your tree, writing to people who seem to match with one of yours, update your tree, have a chat about genealogy etc.

No way is Mr or Ms Average going to fiddle about like you have done. I live in a different world. a fairly tech-free world.

There is a huge amount of advice everywhere in last 3 weeks about how to cope. WE DON'T WANT THIS NEW TREE. WE DON'T WANT TO CHECK SCREEN RESOLUTION. WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF COPING. WE WANT FUN AGAIN.

I agree with a lot of the comments above, I'm also tired of the new system. I've tried to get on with it, just when I think I am coping (not having fun anymore) another problem occurs. I've contacted GR several times in the last couple of weeks,in fact twice this week.My tree is not being displayed properly only in a small area top left hand side, viewing panel has halved in size, now some of the records I've attached are not the correct ones, details of someone else with completely different name and area. I tried to attach again but it keeps telling me record is attached, but it clearly isn't, tried to delete the wrong record but it wont let me. I could go on forever, no doubt as time goes on I will encounter more errors. I'm going stir crazy. GR have advised me to export a Gedcom, but this procedure seems too complicated for me. I never had any problems with the old tree. I am not happy that I've paid my subscription in advance but i am not getting the service I've paid for. I've told GR this but they dont seem particularly concerned. What used to be an enjoyable hobby has turned into a nightmare. When I do get a reply to my emails often or not they do not answer all of my queries and I cant help but feel I'm being fobbed off. With regards to printing off my full family tree, they keep saying to be patient and this will be possible to do soon.I wonder how long it will take them to do this. My subscription is slowly expiring each day and I'm getting little to show for my money. They have certainly let down a great number of members, would just like to know what or if they are going to do to keep their members. I fear a lot of people will not renew, I for one are seriously contemplating this decision.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 23 Aug 2012 19:12

A new member wouldn't know anything about the old tree, so I guess, they would just press on and accept things as they are.

It took me ages to get to grips with my tree on A...........y, but I persevered - made mistakes - got cross - but got there in the end - more or less :-D

Cynthia , Exactly, What people never new they will not miss and just learn how it works

I don't remember my mum wanting her old washer (twin tub) back because she had to learn how to program the new automatic washer

Is a DeLorean better than a Ford Cortina. All I want is a Ford Cortina with a couple of additional toys - like a radio and a tachometer.

How I love to have a new car, a new TV and a new washing machine. I love to read the instructions and play with all the new features.

How I hate to look at this DeLorean designed abomination of a tree. GET RID OF IT.
