My Grandfather's (Cecil MacDonagh Duncan) second marriage to Lilian Helena King nee Boulton produced a son who was the informant on his death certificate in 1944. The initial of the son is D. and his address is the Abbot School Fort Augustus in Invernesshire, Scotland.

I have Cecil's marriage cert, plus his death cert, but I can find no trace of D Duncan the son.

Any help anyone?
Thanks!
Anne

Anne,
If Cecil was born c1931 and died in 1944 then he couldn't have been married twice let alone have children. I think it would be best to revise your dates please.

Anne

Anne Report 27 Feb 2011 21:59

Sorry Catherine, you're so right! Cecil was born 1895, married in 1921 to Lilian Tooley then in 1931 to Lilian King. My mother was his first child and the D Duncan is from his second marriage, so sorry to confuse matters!

This post contains rather sensitive information that might easily be omitted -- perhaps you would edit to remove the word after "second"? There may well be living family who wouldn't appreciate this being talked about on the world wide net.

LHB was born in 1897 and married in 1918, for info.

We cross-posted ... so again, perhaps you would remove the info from your new post that isn't really germane to this search? (first marriage info and parenthetical comment).

I didn't think it necessary to post the details of LHB's previous life events ...

Thank you Catherine this is very helpful.
Apologies Janey if you were offended, I have amended my post.

Hi Anne you now have 3 threads looking for your grandfather, could you please copy all the info onto just one place

I never do understand this "offended" business ... ;) I wasn't offended. My concern was for the privacy of possibly living people. Glad you edited.

Oh great, a gazillion threads. I trust you will edit them as required.

There are rules ... one subject, one post. And not posting personal info about possibly living people, which the details of the birth of "D" struck me as.

Anne

Anne Report 27 Feb 2011 22:21

OK, thank you all so much for your guidance.

Have removed duplicate postings - these were actually about the same family, but as I have discovered more, the search has changed - hence the new thread for D Duncan, born in 1931 ish. Yes he may still be alive - I have a suspicion in Canada, but not sure. But this is a new search - perhaps for his marriage and children

I have also edited comments as requested.

If there's anything else I've done which conflict with the guidelines, just let me know and I can update that too. I don't use this site very much so I am not as up to date with the protocols as all you regulars.

This is a very personal search for me, and this search for family is very important to me.

Thanks.
Anne

Anne

A member on here using the board name Charlie is offering to do lookups at Edinburgh RO, it might be worth sending him a message asking him to do a search for you?

Thank you Mary that is a useful tip!
I have also just read that someone is looking for a George Duncan born in 1942, in exactly the same area of Glasgow as D Duncan - wondering if there may be a family link!

Hi Anne

That's a possibility as Cecil didn't die until 1944.

Mary

Edit to add: Charlie's thread is on the General board, I've just nudged it up for you.

Anne

I know - quite exciting - I have put a message on the thread and will wait to hear - the person is looking for siblings!

Thanks again for your kindness.

In Canada you fall into a black hole for records, as you may know.

First, they're held provincially, so unless you know where someone is/was in Canada, you start out with a handicapp.

Second, privacy legislation prohibits the disclosure of bmd records (vital records) for long periods: generally 100 years for births, 85 years for marriages and 75 years for deaths (some provinces have shorter periods).

Only about half of provinces have any searchable databases on line.

Google.ca and the online telephone directory are often the only resources. Without a full name even ... it's a tough one.

I think the school you referred to (from googling) is actually the *Abbey* School, Fort Augustus.

This is the Old Boys Association website:

http://www.corbie.com/

and here is its page at FriendsReunited:

Thank you Janey, I have already contacted the Old Boys and am waiting for a reply.

I have a University name in Canada which I am also tracing as I believe the person I am tracing to be still alive.

Anne, re your post in the other thread -- you're much more likely to reach that poster if you click on his name and send him a message. After several months he may not be checking his thread(s) here. If he has a current email address in his account at this site, he will receive a notice of a private message (no notice is sent of posts in threads).
