Hello. This is a small part of a very long story which I won't bore you all with but....

I have a letter written my 'M Hazel' in 1929. The address at the top of the letter is 27 Gloucester Road, Regents Park. Having 'googled' this address, I can't seem to locate it and having very little knowledge of London, I'm not sure if the possibilities that are popping up are likely. I realise this letter is 80 years old, but are there any sites which can trace the history of the occupants of an address up until fairly recently??

I'd really like to be able to trace this person as I believe she may have been the sister of my estranged great grandfather.

Many thanks in advance for any tips or ideas anyone can offer,

Kelly x

I can see 2 immediate possibilities:

1. Look (or get someone to look!) on electoral register for that address in and around 1929

2. Look for this person's birth to see if there is a match with your great-grandfather. You need to know your great-grandfather's parents' names really, and his year of birth.

It would help to know what reg. district regents park comes under to look 1911.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your message. I don't know my great grandfather's parents names. I'm presuming 'M Hazel' used to be 'M Nicholls' although this isn't necessarily the case particularly as the only marriages i can find between a Hazel and Nicholls aren't a match...

How do you search the electoral rolls for 1929?? (wouldn't know where to start looking!!)

These are normally held at the library nearest to the area. I have a feeling it might be Westminster, but you need a Londoner to advise! There are 3 options:
Go yourself
Ask for a kind GR member to go for you!
Contact the place and see if they will look - they might charge

I suggest though that you take your tree back a bit first, you never know you might come across this person. If you want to give all details for your great-grandfather would be happy to give it a go.

EDIT there you are - Somersetgirl has sorted it out for you!

Hi, thanks Somerset Girl - I've just mailed the library. Even if they can't help, hopefully they'll shove me off in the direction of someone who can!!

And thanks Jan but I can't go back any further on the family tree - which is why I'm clutching at straws with this letter. My great grandfather disappeared and took everything with him - we don't know who his parents were or even when or where he was born. But we do have this letter from his sister, to my great grandmother - it's all I have!!!!!!!

Regards,
Kelly x

Kelly, I'll have none of that! We here like the impossible challenge. Up to you but if you are willing to post the earliest info you are certain of - grandfather's marriage or birth say - there is a fighting chance it can be taken back further.

Kelly - Gloucester Road is quite a long road running from Kensington High Street in the north to Brompton Road in the south. It is situated just to the south of Hyde Park. Regents Park is just a litte further north. It may well come under Kensington registration district.

Why don't you put all the details you have, however few, on this board. It's amazing what people can find!

Ok, here's what I have...

Frederick Nicholls b 1895c (this year is based on his marriage cert and is very likely incorrect - more likely to have been born anything up to 10 years earlier). He was a Bricklayer. Claimed to have come from Gloucestershire although only known location was Devon.

Married Dulcie Ethelyn Rowe in Aug 1925 in Totnes, Devon. Marriage Cert gives his father as William Henry Nicholls (deceased) - House Builder. His wife and children never met his family. The only contact was this letter addressed to Dulcie from 'M Hazel' in 1929 enquirig about her brother's health. We presume the 'M' is female otherwise 'he' would have the surname Nicholls, although not necessarily!

Frederick abandoned the family in around 1938 and was found in Plymouth and prosecuted but he soon disappeared again. He may have gone back to Plymouth. Rumour had it that he was having a relationship with his landlady in Plymouth - no idea where... Would be nice to find out his background and any possible living relations, or what actually happened to him. It's possible he had another family either before or after the one with Dulcie.

Have tried looking at this from all sorts of angles but have found absolutely nothing. Ordered various birth certs from Gloucestershire, marriage certs between a Nicholls and a Hazel....nowt!

Would be nice to be able to find out something for my grandmother who has always wondered what happened to her father.

Dulcie Ethelyn is quite a strange name - could it be Dulcie Eleanor?

I think that father William is a clay labourer (house building, bricks, etc...) and at the top of the census page is a Jane Rowe, aged 71.
