First time of posting on this site, am hoping for some help finding any info on my Gfathers side, He was Albert George Oliver b 1895 into a large family in Deptford/New cross, London area, i am after any info on his father Willam Alfred Findley Oliver b City of London 1862, He married Eliza Amy Gardner in Chelsea in 1884, I am told by older members of my family that he was killed working on a new department building in Oxford St around the early 1920s but have drawn a blank on this, Also his father William Alfred Oliver is on the Chelsea m cert as being deceased and a "traveller" where did he come from and what was a traveller in those days ? On Williams b cert of 1862 it is blank on the occupation of father, Mother was Emma Maria ? i know she was a Dressmaker and was born in 1830 in Bermondsey, London according to the 1871 census she had another son, Frederick.C, she was also Head of the house at 95, St John Street, London as she was shown as widowed, what happened to him ? |

A "traveller" in those days generally meant a travelling salesman. Even I at my fairly young age of 53 remember some chap turning up on the doorstep with a suitcase full of brushes and stuff - that was in South London too. |

I dont think the Chelsea marriage can be right as Emma M Rutland is shown in census as b 1838 Chelsea not 1830 Bermondsey |

This may be throwing a spanner in the works but there is a death in Clerkenwell (where Emma Maria is living 1871 and 1881) of a William Alfred Oliver in 1860 Dec Q vol 1b page is difficult to read but looks like 351 |

Ron has sent me a PM to say that I am right and the father of William Alfred Findley Oliver WAS William Alfred Oliver (shown on the birth cert of the 1862 WAFO but with no occupation) and his mother was Emma Maria |
