You can indeed! You can edit a thread title to say, for instance, "update - passport?" or some such thing, and you can then even edit your first post to add a new introduction saying "please see post dated XX regarding passports" or some such. ;)

And it's always wise to put the place name in the title, especially if a thread is about a place other than England, e.g. "Ireland". Various members have various particular skill sets / knowlege of resources and they're more likely to look at a thread that identifies the region they're best for.

My own famous thread here is about 7 pages long -- all kinds of info found about the various branches of a family starting from my gr-grfather and spreading out to his siblings. I know of several others of similar length where I and others have posted over time, trying to chase down an elusive person or family. (You tend to get a small group of people interested in the particular story, but they tend to be the ones who have the best skills for a particular type of search.)

For your question in your other thread about "general genealogical questions" -- as you can see, there really isn't any such thing, when what you're really looking for is particular information about a particular person. What you're looking for will determine where to look, so the best thing is always to specify that, and also that you do want to know where and how to look, not just for people to do it for you. Most people here do tend to do the searching and often not identify where they have searched (including where they searched unsuccessfully -- the poster might want to go there and try various searches themself).

And thank you for finding the baptism for Ellen Shields! I am new at this, can you cahnge the thread name to reflect the idea that one question has been answered, but the thread writer wants to go off in another direction, but with the same family?

"Please don’t post about the same person *or family* twice as this can make extra work for the volunteer helpers."

I assume you don't forget that *i* found the baptism of older sister Ellen Shields, and the family in 1881, in your first (?) thread three years ago. That was before the sources where Frances' birth and the 1901/1911 censuses have now been found were available.

Information in threads about children is obviously relevant to searches relating to the children's parents. There is no "end" to a thread, if more information is needed about the same person/family.

With help from the good folks at GR especially Maura, I have found the birth certificate of Fanny Shields! She was three years younger than she said she was. As far as I understand it, that would be the end of this threat - since that is what I was looking for. Now I am trying to find something different, the death time and certificate of her father Daniel. To my way of thinking that would represent a different set of info as I don't know how to find Irish deaths (I'm not Irish) so I started a second thread to find Daniel's death. Was I wrong in doing that? Is that poor protocol? If so, I apologize. Please advise.

To clarify, the family seems to be Scottish/Irish, moving between the two places fluidly.

Oh, one more thing, we have a copy of a baptism cert. for her, with no church name on it, or place -what's up with that, but it lists her baptism date as 16 July /1890, which was her first birthday. If this is accurate it could help.

Thanks, that's Frances Shields' parents marriage tied down. I believe Frances was baptised a Presbyterian - probably at First Pres. of Ahoghill c 1890.
I haven't got the vital stats. to verify this, but it would seem in addition to her oldest siser Ellen(see census) she had other sisters Etta c 1885, Eileen, c 1885 and William c 1890. Her middle names have never been explained, and we can't find any connection between Hunt and Williams and anyone up her family tree.

I know, I know, I sort of gave up, we live in the States, but our daughter just married an Englishman and moved there. If we can find Frances Shields Birth certificate we can apply for Irish Citizenship and be able to visit our daughter and stay for long periods if we would like to. (Frances is my husband's grandmother,) So we would like to solve this riddle for a very practical purpose as well!!)

HI, Thanks for the help, it's hard to be this close! I haven;t had any luck in finding Frances Hunt Williams Shields, b1889. sister of Ellen. (parents, Margaret Dugan and Daniel Shields) Frances swore she was born in Antrim, County Down, but we have not been able to confirm this. Her death certificate lists her has being born in Scotland. The family was fluid between County Down and Glasgow area. I have ordered a couple of Irish birth records searches, but they come back empty; I don't know what to do next. Any ideas?

HI I am looking for info. on Frances Hunt Williams Shields - such distinctive middle names, but no relatives that we know of yet. Fanny was born in Ireland - marriage cert says Ballymena, Antrim, on 16/07/1889. Her mother was Margaret Dougan, and her father Daniel Shields. It is said her father was much older and left Ireland during the potato famine and returned, before starting his family .. or his second family?? Fanny married Thomas Dougan - her first cousin in Bellshill, Lanark, Scotland, on Dec 31, 1919. They later had one son, John, emmigrated to New Zealand and had one daughter Margaret. We know Fanny had at least one sister - any ideas.
