Hi, I am looking for information on a Jeanie SMART from Kirkealdy who married a John Sommerville. Their daughter, Jean Sommerville, came to Australia around 1920 and became Jean Beveridge, my grandmother. Information is sketchy, but would love to hear from anyone who has connections. Many thanks, Margaret

Rather astounding.
Perhaps you missed all the rules/instructions about not posting the same thing twice.
If you want the information to appear on the Smart "surname board" as well as Sommerville, pointing out that you are not looking for help searching (given all the help already offered) and/or linking to the other thread is essential.

Thanks to those who have assisted in this search, it appears I have done something wrong but not sure what. I had no satisfaction on my Sommerville search looking for Jeans parents and just found out her mothers maiden name was Smart, so asked for assistance finding this one. Information I have says her father was a soldier. Apparently the maiden name was not Smart and the father was not a soldier, but thanks Maureen, I will continue my research from here. Sorry if I have offended anyone. Regards, Margaret

I will go to my grave not understanding this English refrain of "sorry if I have offended". There is no issue of offending anyone here.
What you did was break the plain rule against multiple posts about the same person, and the predictable result occurred: Maureen spent time "finding" things that were not lost, particularly because others had spent time finding them in your other thread.
You can click on Help Clinic to review the instructions that are presented when you start a thread, including:
"Please don’t post about the same person or family twice as this can make extra work for the volunteer helpers."
You can also click below the reply box where it says
"Before posting, please read the guidelines for message board use."
and read there:
"Please do not submit the same or similar material more than once."
You simply started a new thread as if nothing had ever been done to help you with this request in the past. Given the response to your first post, was it not entirely foreseeable that other members would respond the same way this time, by trying their best to help find answers? and thus duplicate the effort already put into it.
If there is new information about a person there is already a thread about, it needs to be added to that thread.
The benefit for yourself is that people who have already worked on the problem will see that something new has been added and will take another look at the problem, with all the work done to date readily accessible.

I'm not offended,Margaret.
It would be wise, though, to take Janey's advice. Just keep to one thread and let us work our "collaborative best" on your info. (Good heavens,I was fumbling around in Scotland all alone last night-not knowing others had been there/done that!!).
I'm not certain what you mean by "I will continue my research from here.".
Good luck, Maureen

Hi Guys, Thanks for your messages. I am still a bit confused. Yesterday, by using SMART as a heading I was able to verify who my G.Grandparents were. This was not possible from information already on my SOMMERVILLE thread, so I thought people researching Smart may have been able to help (which you did, thanks Maureen). Now that I know she was not a Smart but a Keays, are you saying I cannot start a thread with KEAYS as a heading? Why would anyone researching Keays look under Sommerville? How do I now try to make contact with KEAYS relatives? Any assistance appreciated. Margaret

You could try changing the heading of your original thread to the surname you are looking for and then add the request to it so that all information is kept together.

Hi Margaret, No new threads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The point is that we helpers (call us crazy) are about the only people who will "see" your surnames on here. Have you tried *Search Trees" for matches?
Darn-I can't explain anything.

Hi Maureen Yes, I have done a Tree Search, no luck. Not so sure about only researchers seeing the surnames. That is how I got into all this and have got as far as I have - just scrolling through messages on every message board I can find, searching for surnames. The first breakthrough I had was from a message posted four years earlier. I will get on now with my searching. Thanks again. Margaret
