Every family has a story... what’s yours?

Every family has a story... what’s yours?

We have an incredible story to share with you this week - Carly Butler has voyaged from her home in Canada to England to trace her Grandmother’s footsteps.

Carly’s grandparents, Nick and Irene, met during World War II in England. Her grandfather Nick was a Canadian solider and met Irene at a dance in London in 1943.  As he left she slipped her address into his coat pocket.  They wrote to each other and arranged to meet up on his next leave from duty. After just three days together he proposed.

Nick returned to service and returned to Canada when the war finally ended. Irene then had to endure a 9 month wait, along with thousands of other war brides, until she could join him.  During that time she sent many letters to Nick detailing her daily life, hopes and dreams.

When Irene died she left behind the bundle of love letters, these letters inspired Carly to set off on a journey to retrace her Grandmothers footsteps.

Every week Carly will open one of Irene’s letters and follow as closely as she can the activities she did that week and she’s been able to literally stand in the same spot that her grandmother would have almost 70 years ago.

Carly even plans to travel back to Canada on the Queen Mary II – her grandmother journeyed back on the original RMS Queen Mary.

You can view Carly's story in full on our YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/user/genesreunited

Carly’s inspirational story shows how important it is to uncover and preserve the unique stories that family’s hold.  We would love to hear from you if you have a story you would like to share with us.  You can email [email protected]
