Samantha,
I have posted a marriage of Bessie Ebdon to Reginald Seller.
You could get that marriage certificate to confirm Father's name.
If the death that I posted was correct, they believe she was born in 1894, which does not fit with the Elizabeth Annie Ebdon born 1898, father Walter.

Samantha,

She was listed as Bessie when she married and died. These are formal documents which seem to suggest she was actually a Bessie and not an Elizabeth.

Both Ivan and Leonard have a middle name beginning with G. Is this a clue to their father's name?

Samantha.........

You haven't once said thank you to the people who are putting themselves out to try to help you

And they could have been saved a lot of searching if you'd given ALL the info in the first posting.

You knew so much about Bessie which you should have mentioned.

Her name is Elizabeth NOT Bessie this is what she was known as,
and You havent given me a chance to thank anyone as yet
I am going by the information that my grandmother is telling me (and no she has not lost her marbles).
Leonards middle names were Charles Oscar Ebdon, we dont know who his father was as there is nothing on the birth cert.

And i would just like to thank the people that have taken time out to help me

So are you saying that marriage as Bessie to Reginald Seller and the death as Bessie Seller isn't her?

When and where did Elizabeth die?
Thanks

We do not think anyone has lost their marbles - for many years I was convinced my Mother was born a year later than she actually was. A friend almost celebrated her 30th birthday with a party, then realised she already was 30. My sister has always been known by her middle name. My children do not know where I was born. I have several friends who have completely abandoned their first names because they did not like them. I could go on and on. That is why we try and check and suggest alternatives and would like as much information as possible, and to know what certificates you have, and what is information from people possibly wrongly remembering.

Hi patchem

I have spoken to my mum & nan and have been told that Elizabeth died in 1987, Maidenhead and yes she did marry a Reginald Sellers and went on to have 4 children with him, my grandfather joined them at the age of about 5yrs after spending all his time in a childs home in Devon.

Many Thanks
Sam

If she died in Maidenhead in 1987, then this is her death record, as I previously posted:
Bessie Seller
Birth Date: 12 Dec 1894
Death Registration Month/Year: Apr 1987
Age at death (estimated): 92
Registration district: Windsor and Maidenhead
Inferred County: Berkshire
Volume: 19
Page: 648
So she was down on an official record as Bessie.
I also posted a marriage for her, and think you could get that certificate for information about her Father

Brilliant.
Hope to hear from you in some days time.
(I think one of the problems is that we get as interested in the outcome of finding your relatives as you do. We are not trying to 'steal' them from you. Pat)

Hi patchem
There was a delay in getting the marriage cert. as i had the bathroom to finish decorating and a very ill pet that i was nursing to her last days (broke my heart after having her for 22 years) and have just come back from a holiday yesterday.
I have at long last managed to get the marriage cert,
Elizabeth (as i have always known her) Bessie was married to Reginald Sellers on 5th Feb 1921 aged 26 years, which means she would have been born 1895, fathers name on the marriage cert. says John Ebdon = Bricklayer.
The only thing that concerns me is that if im wrong than so are a few other members on this site as we have all followed the same tree line that could be wrong.
Looks like i might be deleting alot of information and having to start all over again :-(

Births Mar 1895
Ebdon Bessie Exeter 5b 75

Possible marriage of her parents:
Marriages Jun 1882
Cutler Richard Exeter 5b 203
xxx Dibble Bessie Exeter 5b 203
Dunn Agnes Buckingham Exeter
xxx Ebdon John Exeter 5b 203

If everyone investigating the same people make the same mistakes, they all end up with the wrong family.
Have you asked the other people what proof they have got?
This is why you always need to buy the certificates, and never make assumptions, and take anything anyone tells you without proof with a modicum of suspicion.
(And that includes us helpers, who can also leap to wrong conclusions).

Im so sorry

It doesnt help when my family stand their ground and still are saying (she is an Elizabeth not Bessie although she was known as Bessie)

We have just been away on holiday to Cornwall so passed Ottery St Mary where my grandfather came from, it was only when we got to where we were staying and i was talking to my mum one night that she told me who my grandfather's father was but as he was born 1918 im not going to be able to find a name for him although it was somewhere where my Graet grandmother was working at the time as a servant.

Im so egar to see if i could find something out but it looks like i might have to wait until the next census are due out, long wait :-(

Who were the witnesses to the marriage.

John being a bricklayer fits with the 1901 census that Patchem listed where the name is transcribed as Elsdon.

Hello Everyone that helped on this thread, i have not been on this site for some time as i got so confused with all that was going on with the said person in this thread, well now i am back.

I have re-read this thread a couple of times and firstly i would like to say a very big sorry to everyone as i did not come across as being thankful for all the help and effort everyone had put in, secondly i would like to say a big thank you to you all for all the help and advice given.

I am now ready to start my research on this family, and wondered if some of you may suggest some sites i can use to find the information that i require as it would be rude of me to ask for further help.

Many Thanks
Samantha x

Hello Margee

Im really not to sure, the Ebdons that im researching at the moment are from the Devon area, im sure one of the members did move to the London area later but have not got that far yet and thought it best to start at the beginning and work forward.

i shall take note off this and bear in mind for later.

Thank you for your help
