Smurf - They are read out before the marriage takes place.

Legal Preliminaries to marriage - what are banns?

Banns are an announcement of your intention to marry and a chance for anyone to put forward a reason why the marriage may not lawfully take place.

Banns need to be read in the parish where each of you lives as well as the church in which you are to be married if that is another parish.

You must have your banns read out in church for three Sundays during the three months before the wedding. This is often done over three consecutive Sundays but does not have to be.

Hope this helps

Found this one which looks promising:

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Mayfield, East Sussex, Date: 7 Feb 1759:
Subject: John ELDRIDGE
Spouse: Mary BOWRA

I would say a fairly strong possibility as that was the only John Eldridge and Mary marrying in Mayfield on the Sussex Marriage Index

Giz, thankyou for the lookup, thats him!! Mistranscribed. I know Mary was a Boxall as I have their sons birth cert. They were Romany, so travelled all over Kent and Sussex.

Oh Lord, Ive beggered up big time. I have a Samson Roberts and Mary Boxall with kids Jecoliah, Samson, and more...but the kids were born after 1841. This marriage was too early, so Ive gone WRONG somewhere. Too much of a coincidence to have other people of those names in that location.
Is it definately 1817?

May I ask please if you have anything additional regarding:
William Cooper marrying Susannah Parker, 6-Jun-1786, Shipley, Sussex?
Thank you.

Giz

Giz Report 22 Mar 2008 20:13

Romany Star - yup def 1817 sorry... One other possibility is did they marry after the children were born and would the ages fit this?

Giz

Giz Report 22 Mar 2008 20:15

Lisa J - info from the Marriage Index:
Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Shipley, West Sussex, Date: 6 Jun 1786:
Subject: William COOPER, botp (B)
Spouse: Susanna PARKER

Thank you very much, Giz. May I ask please if you know what "botp (B)" might be?

RStar

RStar Report 22 Mar 2008 20:36

Sorry Giz, have been trying to untangle it all. No, the ages dont fit, as I have a baptism cert for Samson, and his parents. Unless the people you kindly found were entirely different people, that'd make sense. I have baptism and birth certs for Samsons kids too.
Thanks.

Hi Giz

I wondered if you could find a marriage for a Stephen Fogden to Eliza, Lizzy or Elizabeth, possibly in the Chichester area around 1817. Their first child Stephen was born in 1818 in Chichester.

Thanks so much for this.
Kind regards
Belinda

Giz Report 22 Mar 2008 20:54

Lisa J - botp means both of this parish and (B) means by Banns. Cheers. Giz

Hi Belinda - only one I could find is:

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Bosham, West Sussex, Date: 1 Aug 1815:
Subject: Stephen FOGDEN, bach
Spouse: Sarah VERNON, sp botp (B)
Extra Information: Witness wit: Jas FOGDEN; Thos MILAM()

Not sure if this is any connection to your one but at least it has more info with the witnesses

Hi Giz

I don't think this is the right marriage as it fits elsewhere in my tree, but thanks so much anyway. Stephen Fogden and Eliza's marriage is not on the IGI either so is a bit weird.

Thanks very much for your help.
Kind regards
belinda
