Joy *The Carlos Cutie of Ilson* Report 25 Jun 2008 22:06

Hannah Kirkland (born c1835 Mansfield, Nottinghamshire) marries Henry Riley (born c1831 Mansfield, Nottinghamshire) in 1856 in Sheffield.

1861 - Census the surname is mistranscribed as Kiley.
1871 - Hannah is widowed and living in Chesterfield with a lodger by the name of Robert Hallam (born c1836, Leicester)
1881 - Hannah is living with Robert Hallam
1891 - Hannah married to Robert Hallam (1890 Chesterfield)
1901 - Hannah widowed again.

In the 1871 Census there are two girls living with Hannah.

Eliza H Riley born c1868 Chesterfield
Edith H Riley born c1870 Chesterfield

I've found two births for such children with the name Hallam as middle name.

I'm thinking these two girls are actually Roberts. Edith appears to have dropped the Riley name by 1881 Census.

Can't find Eliza after 1871.

You could be right.

my grandmother was registered as Hilda Irvine Surtees ( Surtees being her mothers first married name).
Hildas Fathers surnname was Irving.

Her Parents married 2years after she was born. The Surtees was then dropped & Irvine changed to Irving.

Took him a few years and two more children by the looks of things David (lol).

Wouldn't be an unusual thing with this branch of my family. My grandfather and his younger brother and sister didn't have the same father. My grandfather's mother had a long affair with her brother-in-law (ie: husband's brother) which resulted in the two youngest children.

Great-Grandad stuck with her until the children were grown, then dropped her in favour of her sister, who he remained with for almost 40 years though they never married and had no children.

What a family I come from huh??? :-)

Hi Joy

I've been looking for a death for you for Henry/ but I can't find one.

Do you already have details of his death?

I'm wondering if maybe he didn't die & thats why it took them so long to get married.

Maybe they waited until he did die?

Joy *The Carlos Cutie of Ilson* Report 25 Jun 2008 22:50

Hi Chrisa

I can't find one before 1868 either. I'm beginning to wonder if it was a bigamous marriage to Robert on Hannah's part or maybe they could afford to divorced.

There's a Henry Riley born c1835 Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in the 1891 Census living in Kiveton, Thorpe Salvin, Yorkshire. He appears to die in 1915 in Worksop.

What a puzzle?

Hi Joy

Another branch on my tree has a bigamous marriage also.

Have you tried tracing the Henry you found in 1891 back over to see if there's any trace of him at the same time as your Henry?

It may be him.

Joy *The Carlos Cutie of Ilson* Report 26 Jun 2008 12:40

Hi Chrisa.

Yeah, did that this morning. Looks like it's a different Henry Riley after all. What fun the children are proving too.

It appears they had a son named Joseph born 1858 Brightside. Looks like he was raised by Hannah's brother, William Kirkland born 1832 Mansfield.

Joseph and John both go MIA after 1881, querying emigration.

I've found a marriage for Edith Hallam (Riley). .Can't find anything for Mary or Eliza. It also appears Robert and Hannah had two more children. Frank and Harriet

Frank (poss Francis) is in prison in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1891.

Harriet. I'm just about at the end of my tether with, can't find her after the 1881 Census.

I can't see a John born c1861 in Barnsley in the 1891 census to match him with.

There's a lot of dittos on the page under place of birth so it could ne worth bearing in mind

Joy I've also found what looks like a newly married Joseph in 1891. born c 1857 in Dewsbury, again nothing jumps out at me for a match for him in 1881.
