Oh yes, I forgot to say; Robert and Jane Pettigrew ( no, they were spelling it Petticrew at this time), were living at Hunters Cottages Jarrow on the 3rd Jan 1862. I have tried to find Hunters Cottages but no luck.

If Jane took Robert Murdoch Montgomery with her; and she might have done ... he is not with his 'father' in 1861.... nor does there seem to be any record of him being anywhere in Scotland. Nor is there any record of him having died in Scotland? ... If she took him to England, I think He must have died sometime before Robert, mark 2, was born in 1864. But I can't find a death record in England either.
As you say VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! I hate being beaten too.
Any ideas of any other way we could approach this?

Carole, Can I just check with you about the year of birth for Robert Murdoch Montgomery........the one that should be with his Mum on the 1861, because he is no where else.

Sorry Vera
I was in Jarrow!
Yes Robert Murdoch Montgomery, born June 12th 1859. Registered by David Montgomery June 15th 1859
I can't make out the exact location but it begins with an M and must have been near Tranent

Is it possible Jane and family are missing from the 1861 census because there are parts of the census missing. Click onto the 1861 and scoll down . The missing are in RG 9 piece numbers You can find which parishes are missing on the National Archives online catalogue

Hello Margaret
I understand what you are saying so perhaps it is the late hour and my brain is addled? (It is actually almost 3:00 am here in Spain) .. But I couldn't find the missing parishes.
I really must read up on Piece Numbers, Folio Numbers etc. I'm a bit hazy as to what they are?

Hello Carole.
Its 2.35 pm here in NZ. I have tried looking for piece numbers on the National Archives site previously for missing pieces. Not had much success possibly because I was doing something wrong.
Im sure if you ask on the tips board someoone will be able to help

SORTED!!! AS FAR AS IT CAN BE FOR NOW!!!
THANK YOU CHRISTINE, VERA AND MARGARET.
LET"S PUT THIS ONE TO BED!!
I am now fairly convinced that we will not find Jane and Robert. I don't think they wanted to be found by either of their spouses, .... and to our cost they, or the guardians of our history, made a pretty good job of it!
I don't think any further purpose will be served by searching for John Purvis either. Although obviously linked to the story somehow, via the Cuthbertsons; he was not my Elizabeth's father!
The Purvises, as a family, obviously do have a link with my research into the Hislops, Murdochs and Montgomerys, as do the Cuthbertsons but I need to think about it?
So thanks again for your input. There is loads of valuable stuff here. When I have evaluated, I may start a new, slightly different thread, so watch this space!!!
All the best. You have been great!!
Carole.
