I find it suspicious too!Well we must have a lookup destroyer on our site!
I shall have to watch out for my 3rd thread going!!

I think its a real shame about Kathryn B she is brilliant not only in her lookups but in her wit as well.I miss her not being on here.I learnt alot from the names i mentioned earlier.

so the question becomes

who is asking GR to delete lookup threads .... and is it malicious, or on behalf of one of the subscription sites.

I don't know ....... I just find it suspicious!!

Michelle ......... thank you for those kind words! I do enjoy doing the lookups. Did you know KathrynB is on her second 6 month ban?? Both because of things she said on either General or Chat which were reported by another member.

Hi Michelle,
I don't think it's by accident as you have to give a valid reason for the thread to be removed, I know that Tracey (of Wayne & Tracey had her thread removed when she offered to do look ups)

Yes i noticed this thanks, and think this may well be why threads are being deleted.Whether this is in a malicious way or by accident who knows? Genes need to review the way they delete these request review threads.Seems very unfair to me if the person has done nothing wrong on the thread.

Michelle,
If you click on request review on the right of messages you will see what it says, apparently anyone can request that a thread be deleted take a look.

There is something going on with Genes and lookup threads.Mine was deleted again couple of weeks ago and Smurf and Kirsty(Mad Mum of 4) have had lookup threads deleted also over past couple of weeks.
When they contacted me they did not say what caused the thread to delete and a general message was sent.Kirtsy and i got the same message. It would be helpful if they gave a reason.

Sorry to hear you are no longer doing lookups LFW.Your name and Sylvia in Canada and Kathryn B,Claire in Wales are the names i remember most when i started at Genes. You are brilliant at your lookups and it must be sad for you to stop doing something you enjoy.Which lets face it is helping others. How can that be bad?Says alot for the society we live in now doesn't it!

Hi All,
I don't think it's anything to do with GR, it's ancestry or findmypast who are losing money because people who have subscriptions are doing look ups, I think LFW has it sorted.

You could be right Sylvia. Now Gr have their Gold membership they can't be too keen on their members getting free lookups.

To me there's a huge amount of difference between someone asking for help when they're are stuck because of a transcription error & someone constantly asking for lookups. I will only post "he's on the 1871 as XXX YYYY"

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Nov 2008 22:52

At least two look-up threads have been deeleed in the last couple of weeks, presumably by GR.

Michelle has started hers for the 3rd time

and ((Smurf)) has just restarted his/hers

I wonder if this is GR's way of answering this problem?????

I'm surprised that this has happned to you. I would have thought that the "lookup" threads would have been hit first.

Sorry that you've had to give up helping but you have to look after your own interests.

I have only started to use message board today, and would lik to say I am amazed at the quick helpful response I have received straight away. have been reading through the problems, people have been having for looking up information, if it was not for the helpers out there, I would hav no idea what I was doing, and today I have been given infrmation on a family member, I had been asking about for years. I say thank you to all you helpers out there.
Good wishes to you all

Wow, this has really been a mind opener!
I had no idea that doing look ups for others could cause such a problem. There are so many people that don't even acknowledge that they have actually seen the info you have found for them, makes you wonder if it's worth taking the risk. I will certainly be more careful from now on especially as I haven't finished my own tree yet.
Wonder if there's any connection with the trouble we all had connecting to a certain site the other day?
You are not the only one that is LFW.
All the Best in your own research.

births on freebmd are moving faster than marriages. Even though there are still some gaps 1931 is being transcribed and bits of 1933 have been done.

Any more volunteers from those wonderful people who love helping others but feel they must give up researching on this site?
May save getting too many withdrawal symptons.

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 4 Nov 2008 21:26

I guess we should all be offering to volunteer on the freebmds and freecen sites. That way the info on the census wont have so many transcription errors ( hopefully).
You could offer to do your own area of interest first

How many of us have corrected names on Ancestry when we find errors? Ancestry has benefited from our help

Liz

Liz Report 4 Nov 2008 19:42

Marriages for 1930 are currently being transcribed - and the more people who volunteer to help, the faster it gets done. There is no minimum commitment or anything - just do as much as you like.

Sylvia Like you, I to can't wait for the more recent records. It is frustrating that most after 1925 aren't on yet. I think it depends where to reg district is, as the other day I noticed a marriage record for 1980's(not for my relative sadly)
I too have pointed some folk to the freebmd, especially if they require lots of info for lots of relies.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Nov 2008 19:01

Whippet

I would say that you are safe to do lookups from freebmd .... it is a free site, so they are not protecting their investment!

But, I myself make a point of telling people on here that I have found the information on freebmd, and that they can do the same as it is a free site.

Then I tell them that records after about 1925 or 1930 requires a subscription to ancestry ........... or a helper.

Hopefully, it won't be too long before freebmd carries all the records up unitl 1983, and then it will only be the records from 1983 to about 2006 that will not be free to access.

I'm going to continue doing what I've been doing, until I hear otherwise. There do seem to be loopholes in the t&c's

Mind you ..... I have pulled back from doing as much as I used to do, for other reasons!
