Don't give up on finding their deaths yet. You could try this site
http://www.cemsearch.co.uk/preston/prestonW.html

St Luke's the local church to Deepdale St does not have a graveyard so they could be buried in the public cemetary

also found a possible baptism for son George at St Lawrence Longridge
If correct the Jane shown in 1861 is his 2nd wife

18-6-1843 George son of George , a labourer, and Agnes of Dilworth

Dilworth is another village in the area

Slaters Directory is a commercial directory usually produced by county or area. there are other such as Kelly's. Most of them can be found on the site historicaldirectories.com.

I think it is safe to assume George was at 11 Deeepdale St in 1871 if he is shown as there in the 1873 deirectory as the directories would be published a couple of years or so after the data was collected.

I also had a look at the fiche for 1861 and George was born in Chaigley which is near Clitheroe. Unfortunately the 1881 fiches were not available to check the transcription on there as Chadesley does not seem to exist. Chaigley would fit with the son George being born in Longridge.

Just wondering what is Slaters directory? I am almost 100% sure then he was not in workhouse so thank you for putting that to rest for me. I will have to accept the fact I cannot pinpoint deaths for George and Jane as there are so many Wilkinsons. But thanks for all your help! you are most kind.

this is probably the closest we will get

Preston directory 1873

Wilkinson George, vict., Preston & Longridge Railway tavern, 11 Deepdale St
Wilkinson George (his son?) commercial traveller, 16 east St

Also under tavern name in Slaters 1876 directory

yes it seems as if they have got lost in the passing of time as he was there in 1881 I think I will just have to assume he was there in 1871 to. Thanks for letting me know he was not there in 1891. If you do manage to find him in 1851/41 please let me know - and thank you so much for taking the time to look for me, it is much appreciated.

I suspect you will never find George on the 1871 census. In the Lancs Cro there is no record of Deepdale St nor of the higher house number end of Fletcher Road which on the other censuses runs into Deepdale St. The highest no on Fletcher Road is 179 but 1871 stops at 19! As that is also the end of the folio number I would suspect the next folios went missing a long time ago.
Still looking for George in 1851 & 1841.
In 1891 the Preston Longridge Railway Taven publican was Alice Banks a51.

Tracey Report 7 Jan 2009 16:47

good point - I had not really considered that. I am pretty sure now then that it was not him in the workhouse. i will look at other census and see if I can find him!

The reason I do not think that the 1871 George in a Manchester workhouse does not fit is just that - it was manchester. Parishes were rather particular as to who they could have as a charge on them so as he was in Preston in 1861 & 1881 it would seem likely that if he was in a workhouse it would be a Preston one. Preston Royal Infirmary opened in 1870.

To be honest Tracey, I am not sure that the one in the workhouse IS yours - his occupation does not sem to fit - I believe he is probably still in Deepdale Street but missed off the census.

BUT - don't forget that workhouses at the time were often used as hospitals so, if he was very ill at the time he could have gone into there for treatment, rather than because he was 'destitute', so it is not impossible.

this is getting more and more frustrating!!! I am beginning to think that my George was not in workhouse perhaps after all...it seems odd he would move from the pub and then go back to it! I do wish my family had less common names as it would be easier!! I feel frustrated that the address doesn't appear on 1871 census. As I cannot find Annie his daughter on the census either I am presuming they were together in Deepdale Street. It feels hard to admit defeat though!

Hi Peter, Scary isn't it?

Hi Dea, I think I just found 'your 1871' George on the 1861, age 58 years living at 7 Kirkham Street.

Goodness. nothing more frustrating and he isn't even ours.....will keep looking, nothing like a challenge.

Dea

Dea Report 7 Jan 2009 09:02

I really think this is them on 1871 - it is only a couple of streets away.

As George is 68, perhaps he retired - he is working as a 'day Watchman' on this one (perhaps a part-time little earner' ?)

Then Jane must have died and he moved back into the Pub with his daughters?

Just found this to explain what a Fustian Cutter is,

Fustian Cutter / Weaver A person who lifted and cut the threads in the making of Fustian, formerly a kind of coarse cloth made of cotton and flax. Now a thick, twilled cotton cloth with a short pile or nap, a kind of cotton velvet. A long thin knife was inserted into the loops and the threads cut as it was pulled through, stretched between rollers. The cloth was then brushed to raise the pile. Fustian is the old name for corduroy / A weaver of Fustian

By chance Peter does it give his occupation as farmer? Annie said her father was a farmer on her marriage certificate - We think because she married into 'money' and didnt want family to know he was a publican. I think you are right for me to be cautious, it seems strange George was at Deepdale and then went back again, perhaps it was not him in workhouse....so frustrating. I havent been able to find Annie so maybe she was with her parents somewhere else........a mystery

Tracey

Tracey Report 6 Jan 2009 14:45

thank you all for helping me in my quest to try to find Annie in 1871. Is a real mystery why they were at Deepdale Street in 1861 and 1881 but not 1871! I wonder if on the census it is Longridge RAILWAY HOTEL rather than 11 Deepdale Str - or perhaps there was a fire or soethng and it was uninhabited at the time. Annie must have gone somewhere!
I am grateful to you all - I am driving my family potty they dont understand my obsession!

Thank you Peter,

In the enumeration district details it does say that Deepdale St is included in District 70 on 1871.

However, I have looked at all 49 pages and it is certainly not there - It looks like it must have been missed off!

I did get to the Railway Station and there was a Pub next door but it was on Fletcher Road (the other side of the Station perhaps?) and there were some Wilkinsons next door the other way, on Peel Hall Road, but that was a William who was a 'cowman'.........drat!!!

I'll try to look when I next go to Lancs Record office - should be sometime in next couple of weeks. They do have an index of streets for some census returns - as it is a Preston address that is probably one of them.

Dea

Dea Report 5 Jan 2009 21:01

Tracey,

Have you noticed that the family were at the same address in 1861 and 1881 - 11 deepdale street?

This means that we need a look up on 1871 for that address! - Sorry - I don't have access to a site which does that but perhaps someone else does?

Dea x

P.S. - I think 'findmypast' would do this but it is 'pay to view' unles you have a subscription??
