Ah right, that explains that! So at least we know she used the Skinner name for her children, even though she married in a different surname later. Remember, Mr Gibbs might well have been married and a divorce wasn't possible for one reason or another -- very common before our day and probably meaning nothing but a marriage breakdown, also very common in our day. ;)

janey, if you go back a bit i covered all mays children. shen never married len gibbs, just had 8 children and gave them all his surname. there are still a couple living as i said before and dont want to put any details here for obvious reasons. she was with him a long time but something changed and then she left before marrying jim.

its a strange world and the people in it, never quite understand peoples actions sometimes and i guess we never will, thats whats makes the world an interesting place.

off to get daughter up for school and me off to the little darlings at the playgroup!!!!
back later flo

Ah, I don't think I realized you knew more about her.

Name: James Breaker
Spouse Surname: Biggs <<
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1953
Registration district: Sittingbourne
Registration county (inferred): Kent
Volume Number: 5b
Page Number: 1467

Stupid Ancestry mistake. The index clearly says Gibbs.

Name: May Gibbs
Spouse Surname: Breaker
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1953
Registration district: Sittingbourne
Registration county (inferred): Kent
Volume Number: 5b
Page Number: 1467

A previous marriage, I assume?

A lot of May-s married Gibbs-s, but no May Skinner.

There are Gibbs-Skinner births in Cranbrook in 1927 and 1929, Milton in 1939 and Sittingbourne in 1941. Are any of those her children?

Trying to get at whether she might be in the 1911 with a surname other than Skinner ...

hi janey, its been a while. yes i am going to order the 1905 maidstone cert, it looks good.had to laugh at the ones you found with the surname of boozer!!!! what a name.

when aunty may died in 1963 , she was married to jim breaker and lived around sittingbourne in kent, so may order death cert to see if any other clues.

in the meantime, yes ive been still searching like you but no luck really.anyway will see what turns up and will let you know when i get certs.

at least we found sophies birth but as i said earlier it was 1878 not 1881 as stated before.

thanks for looking

How about

Name: May M Skinner
Spouse: Albert Baglee
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1927
Registration district: Greenwich
Registration county (inferred): Kent
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 2204

(I'd have to go searching back to check whether this was before or after your grandparents' marriage where she was a witness, and you can tell at a glance.)

No, sigh. This is that May M's death, I think.

Name: May Margaret Baglee
Birth Date: 3 May 1904
Death Registration Month/Year: Jan 1995
Age at death (estimated): 90
Registration district: Greenwich
Inferred County: London
Register number: B62
District and Subdistrict: 2291B
Entry number: 221

Births Jun 1904
Skinner May Margaret Greenwich 1d 1041

I don't see a Miriam May born 1905 in deaths, to match.

If you get the 1905 birth certificate it will give you an exact date of birth, which can be used for searching deaths from about 1970 onward, even without a surname.

She still just ain't there. Don't forget, you can spend hours looking for her in the 1911 yourself. ;)

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

I've been looking for all variations of May / Miriam / May Miriam, for wildcard surnames like S*ner, for May 1903-1907 living with Sophie no surname, etc etc.

Maybe someone with paid access would check this one?

INSTITUTION SKINNER MAY 1904 7 Edmonton Middlesex

... or has that already been done ...?

Got a chuckle out of "Widiam". ;)

Births Jun 1905
Skinner May Miriam Maidstone 2a 861

There's a May Miriam in Maidstone in 1911:

FULLMAN MAY MIRIAM 1903 8 Maidstone Kent

but the other occupants are

FULLMAN MIRIAM PHOEBE 1834 77 Maidstone Kent
BOOZER ELLA PHOEBE 1879 32
BOOZER ERNEST ALFRED 1878 33
BOOZER MAJORIE DOROTHY 1909 2

hi back again, think i have found the missing may skinner. aunty has the marriage cert of my grandparents and one of the witnesses was may miriam skinner. i say miriam, aunty thinks it looks like widiam, but you know how awful the writing was in early days. anyway found a birth in jun 1905 maidstone, kent on free bmd. does anyone have access to 1911 to see the household she was with. this should be her brother, charles arthur, mum sophie and father charles edward.

going back a bit to sophie, i got the birth cert, she was born in thanet 25dec 1877 reg mar 1878 so she also fibbed about her age in previous months. none the wiser about her father as it gives a name of charles van convander, fisherman, whereas before on her marr cert it said alex van coevorden sailer???

i guess we will never get to the bottom of that one, but with may i think im nearly there.

so any help would be appreciated
thanks flo

Here's an odd one.

SCKINGER MAY 1909 2 Tonbridge Kent
living with
[... deleting household info, ruled her out.]

There is actually a Sckinger entry in the GRO, Fridolin born 1897 St George Hanover Square, death recorded as Sekinger, as was father's marriage. And there's a Lucy 1903 in an institution in Croydon in the 1911; birth also Sekinger. ... Yeah, Irene May Sekinger born Brighton 1908. Rule 'er out.

I dunno LK -- the 1911 just refused (and still refuses) to show me any other Skinners living with that Elsie May in Maidstone (Staplehurst, presumably), so I was curious about her, was all at this end. There must be some glitch in the transcription that separates her from the household (Ancestry does it all the time).

No ... I was reading it as ELSIE May (that was what another one the search turned up was, in Bromley) ... so yes indeed, seems to be ruled out.

janey checked out thr cranbrook entry. there is a great chance this is connected, will have to order cert to make sure, but im 99% sure.

i was born in sussex and moved to kent when i was 2. i lived there for 30 years until i left to get married and moved up here to scotland. so cranbrook, malling, maidstone, ashford are all in kent and close by each other. i have sena few mispellings such as wathurst, which is wadhurst,sx and i think bridge in kent is actually tonbridge, kent. obviously its harder for you not knowing the district but i do and can help out with the geography.

i am intrigued with the find of elsie may skinner jun1905. that does fit quite nicely with dates and area. again my only chance to prove who she was is to order this birth cert and see who her mother was. the other beatrice who was in an isolation hospital in east grinstead, west sussex. a bit away but in that area it is well known for specialist hospitals such as a burns unit which is still operating today. and of course would not have shown on 1901 census, not born and 1911 was in hospital.so she wouldnt have shown anywhere really except when she was born!!
so thanks to gillian, ladykira and janey today,a lot of info to digest and more pennies to the gro. if hubby new how much i was spending just now, he would have a fit. but hey i do work too and so it is coming out of my pay as it were.

just a thought, i personally think may lived with len, had his kids, gave them all his name and for whatever reason one day, left ,met mr braker and married him. i really dont think there was anyone else. thats my gut feeling, but hey you never know in this world do you?
will let you know ladies when i get certs .thanks flo

Can anybody tell who this child is living with in 1911? Wildcard searches turned up zip for me.

HOUSEHOLD
SKINNER ELISE MAY 1905 6 Maidstone Kent

likely:

Births Jun 1905
Skinner Elsie May Maidstone 2a 858

(May have married Robbins 1922 Maidstone.)

I also wonder about this one:

INSTITUTION
SKINNER BEATRICE MAY 1907 4 Malling Kent

(I don't see a matching birth.)

I don't know my Kent geography so I have no idea. ;)

Useful to know how the children with Gibbs were registered -- surname Gibbs, mother's surname Skinner? Were they born starting in 1927 in Cranbrook?

(I don't want to put names and other details here as you've said some of them are still living. You can check for the births of some you know at FreeBMD to be sure of what they say.)

Assuming that either May or Mr Gibbs was already married, I wonder about this marriage:

Name: May Skinner
Spouse: Samuel R Little
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1924
Registration district: Dartford
Registration county (inferred): Kent
Volume Number: 2a
Page Number: 1353

The only Samuel R Little born 1885-1908:

Births Mar 1906
Little Samuel Robert Sunderland 10a 724

1911:

LITTLE SAMUEL R 1906 5 Sunderland Durham

suggesting that the bride was quite young as well, if that is the groom.

There don't seem to be any Little-Skinner births to match.

... But he died in Sunderland, 1978. Although ... there is no marriage in Sunderland. So I do wonder. Was May married and estranged or deserted when she met Mr Gibbs?

I really would get her marriage certificate to have whatever info it might give.

morning peeps, thanks for continued support.
ok re clara syrett that is a very likely poss so will need to order that cert, good work on that.

charles edward skinners father is stephen john so that is correct and ties in. yes janey they all seem to lie about their age for some reason!

onto may skinner. start and the end and work back.
she died as may breaker ond q 1964 sittingbourne, kent age 59

she married james breaker in amj q 1953 in sittingbourne kent. it gives the names of persons married to breaker as gibbs.

some time ago when she was probably in her 20s she took up with a len gibbs and had 8 children by him. i am told that she never married him. they eventually parted company and she married james breaker no further children as far as i know.

i have searched a lot. in fact on free bmd if you put in marriages to james breaker it comes up with nothing which i dont understand as i located the marriage and death on gr?

if i ordered the marriage cert it might only show her maiden name as gibbs beacause although they were not married, maybe she chose to be known by that name, so i guess that wouldnt help. i have an aunty who has shown me a photo of her with my grandmother(sister inlaw) so i know she existed but also other family members remember aunty may from when they were young. its a bit of a mystery as is the whole family but that i guesss is what makes life interesting twists and turns at every corner.

well i have to go out for a while with my daughter so wont be back on until later tonight and then will catch up thanks flo.

oh as far as i know she was just may skinner and no middle name that we know of.
