Hello claire....I'm afraid i can't help you...there are about 25 Parishes in the chesterfield area, and your information is far too vague to make to have any realistic chance of a successful search.....

Hi Derek

Looks like a might have found them after all. Well, I found a marriage in the name of Rebecca Deakin registered in Oct/Nov/Dec 1908 - actually in Nottingham, (but they could have moved - Golden Valley/Alfreton isn't far away) and cross checked it with Tom Watson - same date.

Can do no more now than send for the certs and see what they turn up.

Would be grateful if you could also keep looking for me.

I had already found all the children of the marriage, and all but the last one of 7 were registered in Belper, the last one registered in Basford (Nottingham), which is where I found Rebecca's marriage (if it is her).

Would still be very grateful if you could continue to search on my behalf and thanks for all your help so far.

Rubys.........John Smith!! wow..lol

OK.........have searched Wirksworth without any success...would have been handy if you had given me the name of John's wife on the Marraige certificate....

Now then..Carburton is near Worksop..and WHITWELL Derbyshire (sometimes recorded as Whitwell Worksop Notts) is right on the Derby/Notts Border..and i'm thinking your JOHN SMITH was born there 1848, because that is the only match I can find...son of Samuel and Elizabeth..05.03.1848..

What i want from you is;.....was the name of his wife Annie????..in which case she was born in Wath on Dearne Yorkshire (Rotherham) close enough to Worksop as to make no difference....John was in Wath on Dearne with his wife Annie from 1870 till at least 1901....tell me if i am wrong.

If I'm right John had two brother Samuel 1839 and George 1843..and Samuel Smith senior was indeed a Labourer.

I can go back from there if the info you have fits in with what i have found.

rubys......I haven't yet got the birth details of Samuel and Elizabeth..largely because i don't have the Whitwell Parish records..BUT..

I do know they were married`prior to 1831 because i have found their earlier children

Thomas 1831
Harriet 1833
Mary 1836
Samuel 1838

followed by George 1843 and JOHN 1848.

I have further information on Harriet a sad story....by 1851 she was away from home and in Service
She married SAMUEL EDGE (born 31.07.1829..in 1856..had her first and only child Elizabeth Ellen Edge 18.10.1857..and died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter ...strangely enough in the same area that her brother
JOHN had moved to..i.e Rotherham..died at Carburton Worksop and was brought back to Whitwell where she was buried 1858

Samuel edge originally came from Cuckney in Notts.(Near Worksop!)
you may or may noy know that JOHN and his wife ANN or ANNIE had EIGHT children up to 1901 (I'll have a look on the 1911 Census for an up[date on that.)

ANNIE RUSSELL was baptised at Wath on Dearne 11.04.1852 Daughter of George and Martha.

More later

rubys...addition to message below.

1911 Census...John is dead..don't know when..

69 Barnsley Road Wath on Dearne Rotherham:

Annie Smith widow..washerwoman..aged 59
Doris Smith Daughter Single aged 16
Beatrice Fretwell Grand-daughter..single aged 15

Beatrice is obviously the daughgter of either ANNIE L. GERTRUDE or ALICE the other three daughters of John and Annie.

Good morning. Rubys.....I now have the Whitwell burials.....not surprisingly there are a large number of Smith's..but also quite a few Edge's..including Harriet..:-

SAMUEL SMITH 13.10.1881 aged 76
ELIZABETH SMITH 20.10.1888.aged 82

HARRIET EDGE (of Rotherham) 14.03.1858 aged23

That's about all i can do for now, unless you want me to look at John's siblings.

Hi Derek
its Rose here Thank You for getting in touch
we have found Morton's on the census and death records around Derbyshire, we just need help in identifying the relationship to Isaac. we have found the male ancestors of Isaac but do not know the wives, we have gone back to Elias Morton who was living in Tynemouth. my grandmother Elizabeth Carty b.aug1900. was born in Wexford, Ireland any advice in tracing her would be fantastic.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for helping with Marsh family from Scarcliff, if you have any additional information please let me know.

I was wondering whether you could help with another family connection with Derbyshire. My cousin in Austrialia, had original maiden name of Hall and I have managed to trace her ancestors back to a William Hall born 1864 from Whitwell in Derbyshire. I can't get any further back, would be able to tell any information about his parents or siblings

Regards
Mark

Derek,

Many thanks for your help.

Just out interest I live in Worksop, whch isn't that far from Whitwell and Langwith, Scarcliff. If I ever get some time to spare would I find anything by visiting the place ie gravestones etc.

Or at some point would it be worth me visiting Matlock for the records office and how easy is it to us?

Cheers
Mark

Derek Report 20 May 2010 13:58

Hi Mark..I was going to look in the Whitwell Graveyard yesterday, but didn't have time because i had business at cresswell. At Matlock you wll no doubt find records for Whitwell..but it is hard work. i'm going again as soon as I can..and will do the work for you.

As you know, I have the Scarcliffe Parish Records, and i will send you, bit by bit, all the MARSH entries.and you can work out the relationships!!

There are 25 Marsh Burials and incidentally half a dozen HALL's
It's always a good idea to go headstone hunting!!

EDIT..14.21...have found loads more....I can tell you now to go to Whitwell where you will find loads of HALLS, and their descendants..I have found most of them and in some cases, photos

William 1864 had 11 siblings!!

Derek.

Mark Report 21 May 2010 17:54

Derek,

Many, thanks for this help -- any information you send me it greatly appreciated. I doubt whether I will get to Matlock any time soon!

I think the Marsh stumbling block in where William Marsh and fhis wife Amy (father of Samuel born 1805 in Scarcliff) come from.

A distant cousin who is has also done a tree on genes reunited believes the parents of Wiliam are jonathan marsh who married a Sarah Gervois in 1764 at I believe Upper Langwith, so somehow I amlooking for the link that ties this speculation together.

I have also come accross a website listing pub lanlord in scarcliff in the 18th century and there is a Jonathan Marsh around 1778.

So keeping my fingers crossed for any infor you turn up

Many thnaks for your hard work

Mark

Hi Mark..........just for the moment let's concentrated on Whitwell and the Halls.........would beinterested in what you know after 1864, becasue i have a whole load of stuff about later marriages and children with some photographs virtually doen to the present day.

William Hall was born Whitwell 1864 the son of:-

JOHN HALL 22.04.1821 to 12.12.1874..born and buried at Whitwell

on 19.07.1848..married

JANE PRESLEY 03.06.1824 to 28.05.1891..buried (Jane hall) at Whitwell

Parenyts of JOHN HALL:_

JOSEPH HALL born Wadworth Yorks 30.01.1795 died Whitwell 25.06.1855
who..on 04.12.1816.. married ALICE FRISLEY of Cresswell...they` are both buried at Whitwell

There are 12 children of John and jane if you haven't already got them

More later
