Sorry Derek, twas a case of nuttiness. I misread the place names and mixed up two people of the same name. The place I need is Monmouthshire Wales. I will never learn all your English places. You can have a test on Aussie place names sometime if you like.

Thank you for the offer of help. If I ever find a rellie who lives in your neck of the woods I will ask.

Derek

Derek Report 27 May 2010 09:33

Aunty..send me the enquiry i have the census Records for Monmouthshire Wales..........Derek..

AuntySherlock Report 27 May 2010 10:17

I was going to ask for the 1891 household of Ernest William Hill born c 1874 and died 1894 Glamorgan Monmouthshire.

However for him to be the father of Frederick William Hill, Frederick would need to have been born 1891 and unreliable information has him born around 1888.

So for the purpose of elimination would you tell me the names in that particular household around the 1891 census please.

I will transfer the information to my Frederick Hill thread to keep the info in the one place. I do appreciate your help.

Mark..have today visited Whitwell Church......not much to report except I found two HALL graves that are readable...one is of joseph and Alice nee presley..parents of John hall........and i have a photograph of that stone if you want to PM your email..

the other is much earlier and showsHenry son of James and margaret Hall died jan 4th 1730..aged 12..............

There are clearly other HALL burials....but none that i can read.....

Derek,

Many thanks for this information! I knew you said that you had photos of Hall's from 1864 to present day I haave just e-mailed you my email addrees which could send them on.

Also looking at the 1881 census I found a Marsh family residing in Chester. The head of the family being a Samuel Marsh born in Lagurth (according the transcriber on findmypast ) which is presumably Langwith in 1836.

Currently I have no Samuel Marsh born around the date. Do you any information as to parents?

Hi Derek, I believe I have it at last, time difference on your thread confused me. So back to my original request of further data on my grandfather Thomas Collis, b.1879, d.1931, & one of his siblings, a certain Samuel Collis, who was Mayor of Derby 1925/6.
As I stated previously I have conflicting results as to who their parents & grandparents where.
Hope this works.
By the way, where can I find this text i.e. file after submitting it. You state it will appear on your thread ....but where exactly
Regards
Eric

Derek Report 27 May 2010 22:56

Hi Eric..........through all the various COLLIS people in derbyshire in this period..only one fits.

Thomas Collis born December 1880..son of John and Elizabeth Collis..He died in 1931

John was a Coal dealer...
1861 there is a Daughter Mary

1871 there are the following children:-

John 1864
SAMUEL 1867
Sarah 1871

By 1881 there additional chilkdren:-

Elizabeth 1873
Joseph 1875
Arthur 1877
George 1879
THOMAS 1880
Edgar 1883.
all living at 3 bassindine buildings. Stockbrook Street Derby

much the same in 1891...but living at Burton road derby no 64

Thomas marries Ada in 1901 and on the 1911 Census they have two children Annie 1903 and reginald 1907

I can't go any fyrther than 1911

Derek.

Hi Aunty..just typed all this out once and then somehow lost it!!

This is very difficult..first glamorgan and Monmouthshire were two different counties.....and Ernest William Hill..and Federick William Hill appear at least three times each.(different families) in the period in question.

How sure are you that Ernest was Frederick's father??? i can find no evidence of that...........FREDERICK WILLIAM HILL was born in either1890 1894 (13.02.1894) or 1897..with parents either Thomas and Emily, or Geroge and Cecilia or Henry and Emma.......
Ernest was born in either1873 or 1875 or 1877..one of them (or maybe another one) died Jan/Feb/March 1894

in 1891 there is no clue as to which is which...certainlky one or both remained single at least till after the 1901 census......

FREDERICK WILLIAM HILL 13.02.1894 had parents Geroge and Cecilia and died 1971......the onky one to be born in newport monmouthshire......

i need more info from you like perhpas ernest parents????

Good luck.

Derek.

Great , thanks Derek.
If you get chance I would be grateful if you could confirm details of the parents of John & Elizabeth Collis who I believe was a Philip Collis.
With tongue in cheek - just how far back can you trace my heritage ?
Thanks again Eric

Oh Derek, You really should not have asked those questions you will the drawn into the 'orrible Hill type web with which I have to deal.

As I said for the purpose of elimination. Too late. I will give you the link to my thread. You can tear your hair out along with all who venture upon it.

http://www.genesreunited.com.au/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1207472

By the way the Hill deaths are irrelevant because he went to Oz. And no, I do not know where he died.

I am grateful for the information you have provided I will be able to use it to cross another Hill family, or maybe two off my list. Thank you.

Morning Eric........Yep......Philip Collis married Mary Buntin(g) 27.01.1818 at St. Alkmund derby..........Mary I believe came from Ashover..easily checkjed because i have the Records...and the answer to you question is,at the moment 31.05.1797...when PHILIP COLLIS was born in Mugginton son of John Collis and Elizabeth........I don't have actually have much in the way of Derby City records........but I'm pretty damn crafty when it comes to sniffing things out..........by the way all my inform ation is confiemed 100%

1851 Census..Philip and mary are living at 55 Burton Road Derby..with their children:

Job 1818
William 124
Elis(e) 1827
Frederick 1830
Phebe 1833
JOHN 1835
Samuel 1841

John is already a brickmaker at age 16..and all the census returns follow through to 1911 without any anomalies

Derek excellent service, now for the oter side of the family.
As we know Thomas Collis married Ada McClocklin in 1901 (where?)
Ada McClocklin was one of about 22 children born to a James McClocklin b.c1851 and a Charlotte Tristram b.c1846 .
Would you have any marriage details, addresses, occupations; records of Ada,s siblings and the family tree and ancestors of James McClocklin
( Irish, I think)
Eric

Derek

Derek Report 29 May 2010 08:46

good morning Eric..I'm not going to be able to go much further with Ada because she's not on the 1891 0r 1901 census......trouble is were getting into the area of variations of spelling of mclocklin.mcgoughlin.mclachlan..etc.

She was born in Derby 03.09.1881..and died 07.03.1975

Her father was James Mclocklin 1851-1919 also born in Derby....can't find him either.......

Her mother was Charlotte Tristram 1847-1921 one of eight children of Thomas Tristram of lancashire and his wife Jane..who did in fact come from Ireland...

That's really all i`can tell you

Derek.

Derek Report 29 May 2010 10:11

Mark!!..wakey wakey.......I've got the Hall family sorted accurately..not from Yorkshire at all....Whitwell born and bred and died!!..tell you later..

Now going back to the Marsh family..remind me of the link you're looking for between the Hall's and the Marsh's

Derek.

Mark

Mark Report 29 May 2010 23:06

Derek,

Just picked-up your message from regarding the Hall, brilliant if you can let me any information you have.

The link to the Marsh family is via my cousin Christine Hall born now residing in Austrialia (I am helping trace her ancestors). Her mother Kathleen Marsh (my mother' sister) married Frank Hall, born 1921

Incidentally, my mother lived in Langley Street, unitl the War --- but she can't remember the Hall family.

Frank was the son of Ewart Hall and Agnes Kinight (I believe), and my cousin Christine seems to believe her father Frank was named after Ewart's brother who died in the Great War (she believes).

Christine, also recalls her grandfather being a builder whose business failed.

So if you have all the infromation on Hall's that is brilliant

I don't know which connection to ask you to invesitgate next (in your own time as I realise how busy you are - I let you pick.

On my mother's father side we have the Marsh family (Scarclliff / Langwith - any information pre- 1764, particularly Jonathan Marsh and his wife Sarah Gervois) or Grace Carson born Whitwell 1853. Or on my mother's mother side Richard Poole born 1860 (living in Whitwell from the late 1880s) in Somerset - no idea of his wife's maidend name or his parents.

Many thanks for the your help, so far

Regards
Mark

Ok Mark.this may take some time.so i'll do it in bits.......Let's take the HALL family first.....there is now no doubt that the HALL's originated in Whitwell and surrounding area..and not in Yorkshire.....
The story begins..at least at the moment..with JOSEPH HALL 1796 -25.06.1855.and ALICE FRISLEY (FRISBY?) 1796- 1860..at Whitwell.....

They had the following children:

Anne 1821
JOHN 1822
Mary 1823
William 1826
Elizabeth 1827
Joseph 1829
Frederick 1831
Hannha 1835
Stephen 1837
Alice 1840...
JOHN HALL married JANE PRESLEY (loads of Presleys in Whitwell graveyard)

JOHN HALL married Jane Presley19.07.1848..John died 12.12.1874 jane died 28.05.1891

amongst their ELEVEN children..was WILLIAM HALL(John Hall is now a Publican)
WILLIAM HALL 1864 married ELLEN and had several children including FRANK 1895 and EWART.1897..........and the rest you can work out......down to Christine.........

Late noiw..will give you the MARSH family tomorrow
EDIT..as you are aware the Hall's were eventually in Worksop..you'll be intyersted to know that the Marsh family were linked also to Letwell near Worksop
Derek...
