I was pretty definiitely wrong on the 1841 census I posted on page 1; this one looks more like:

Civil parish: St Stephen By Saltash
Registration district: St Germans

Robert Hoare 20 - Navy
Betsey Hoare 20
John Hoare 2
James Greet 40

... I had miscalculated son Nicholas's age; he would not have been born in 1841.
In 1851, your Robert Hoar's occupation was Coast Guard and Boat Man.

The 1841 Robert I posted before was likely the one married to Maria Anna Broad (submitted records in the IGI):

Deaths Dec 1839
Hoar Maria St Germans 9 119

Oh well. I have enough cousins anyhow ... but I thought I did offer some "help or clues" regarding Robert Hoar born c1817 in Saltash ..

And the thing is, Hoar / Hoare / Hore is actually quite a common name in Cornwall. Nicholas is also fairly common around those parts and does run in families -- it appears frequently in the Bond family my Francis Hoare Hill married into.

1861
Civil parish: Saltash
Registration district: St Germans
County/Island: Cornwall

Nicholas Hoare 35 - born Saltash c 1826; captain of river steamer
>> Robert Hoare 11
Edwin Hoare 9
John Hoare 6
Nicholas Hoare 3
Samuel Hoare 2
Jane Hoare 4
Mary Hoare 35
Sarah Hoare 80

>> The Robert you inquired about, in 1901:

Name: Robert N Hoar
Age: 50
Estimated birth year: abt 1851
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Margaret A
Where born: Saltash, Cornwall, England
Town: Hurworth
County/Island: Durham

I would think it quite likely that this Nicholas Hoare c1826, father of the Robert Nicholas Hoar in Durham, is a brother of Robert Hoar c1817, father of your Stephen.

A good site here for Isle of Wight records:

They have Stephen Hoar born 1854, Godshill. Two names for mother, Clines or Elines.

It also has the marriage to Emily E. Jones, 1876.

Maria Report 2 Dec 2009 17:41

hi As you say Hoar is not that common name. I came across a Rodert Nicholas Hoarb Sept 1850 in Saltash and died 1904 in Newton Abbot. He was a customs officer married twice to Ann Sinclair and a Margaret Mercer. I thought he might be connected as Robert and Nicholas are family namesHe was in County Durham in 1891 any help or clues?

It came up for me in three seconds, Stephen Hoar + Emily.

Couldn't see any reason for Maria not to look herself!

This is their marriage....it didn't seem to come up for me under Hoar

Marriages Sep 1876

HOAR Stephen I Wight 2b 953
Jones Emily Elizabeth I. Wight 2b 953

This fits in nicely with the 1881 census in which Ada Jones is listed as Sister in Law

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Dec 2009 17:13

Anyhow, the reason I was interested.

My grx2 grandfather, baptised Francis Hoar Hill, had a brother named Stephen Hoare Hill, born 1822. Father James Hill, mother Ann -- and I have always assumed she was Ann Hoar(e). I know nothing more about James and Ann, or their son Stephen. The two sons were baptised in Tamerton Foliatt, Devon (Devonport). That part of Devon and the bit of Cornwall adjoining it were somewhat interchangeable, and people moved back and forth. I think my Hills, and Hoar(e)s, if such they are, were likely from Cornwall, possibly the Saltash area.

Francis Hoar(e) Hill married (or not) Sarah Emma Bond of St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall. In 1851, Francis and Sarah were living in Linkinhorne, Cornwall, in a cottage that seems to be adjacent to a farm owned by a Hoar family. I have surmised that the (deceased) father of that family may have been an uncle of Francis.

Your Stephen's father, in 1871:

Name: Robert Hoar
Age: 54
Estimated birth year: abt 1817
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Betsey
Gender: Male
>> Where born: Suttash, Cornwall, England

Robert Hoar 54
Betsey Hoar 55
Nicholas Hoar 23
Louisa Hoar 24
Mary A Newbery 22
Thomas Hoar 19
Stephen Hoar 17
Margrate Hoar 14
Rosena Hoar 11 months
James Hoar 3 months

>> Saltash, Cornwall.

I'm not seeing Robert in 51 or 61 - someone else may have done that by the time I'm finished here. ;)

But I wonder whether this is him in 41:

Name: Robert Hoar
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1806
Where born: Cornwall, England

Civil parish: St Mawgan (in Pyder)
County/Island: Cornwall
Registration district: St Columb Major

Robert Hoar 35
Nicholas Hoar 1

Which might make Betsey his second wife.

--- edit, see page 2 --- the above is the wrong Robert; I think these are your Stephen's parents in 1841:

Civil parish: St Stephen By Saltash
Registration district: St Germans

Robert Hoare 20 - Navy
Betsey Hoare 20
John Hoare 2
James Greet 40

"My" Hoars on the farm in Linkinhorne seem to have come originally from the Linkinhorne area, relocated to St Columb for a generation, and then moved back. In 1861 the family includes children born in both St Columb and Linkinhorne.

My theory is that "my" Ann Hoar married James Hill in St Columb Minor in 1817. A John Hoare married Grace Blowey in St Sampson, Golant (where Grace Hore in 1861 was born), 17 Feb 1820, and I think they are the couple with the farm in Linkinhorne. In 1841, they are:

John Hoar 50 (deceased by 1851)
Grace Hoar 40
Grace Hoar 18
William Hoar 15
Jane Hoar 14
Catherine Hoar 12
John Hoar 10
Ruben Hoar 7
David Hoar 4
Samuel Hoar 2
Joshua Hoar 2weeks

I had delved into these people in great detail back when familyhistoryonline had complete Cornwall census records readily available. Those records have now gone to FMP to which I don't have access. I'm not sure how many of them I printed off (and didn't recycle, thinking they would always be easily accessible). I would have to shuffle through piles of paper to find what I kept.

Now, it isn't like Hoar(e)s aren't a dime a dozen in Cornwall.

In 1841 there are a couple of dozen in St Stephen by Saltash, variously spelled Hore and Hoare. (The spelling was completely interchangeable at the time.) An Ancestry user has corrected the name from HONE in one household, and could be contacted through that system - although that head of household seems to come from Scotland.

All this in response to that vague question ... but you never know, we might be cousins. ;)
