Hi Cherilyn,

All i have is the death obituary that was printed for both of them in the Banffshire newspapers in Scotland.

I just wondered if i could find out if Lizzie and Allan MacDonald had any children.
Any mention of kids in the obituaries over there.

Anything really, just clutching at straws. I have nothing on Lizzie or any family she had.

Cheers, Carole.

Sorry Carole, nothing found. Do you know any more of Allan? ie parents names, year of birth, middle name? There are over 100 possibles so need more info. Maybe he remarried. Do you know when he died?

nb Elizabeth's death reg has her as McDonald, not MacDonald.

Hello Cherilyn,

Allan was born in 1878 in Argyle,Scotland. He married Lizzie Gifford in 1919 at Mingarry,Acharacle,Argyll. They emigrated after the marriage.

The parents of Allan MacDonald (McDonald) were John and Sarah MacDonald.
They were both from Argyle,Scotland and both died there (Sarah in 1910)

Lizzie's father Edmund Gifford arrived in Australia on the ship "ORVETIO"
in September 1926 (he travelled with his other daughter Helen and her husband Peter Martin (they went back to Scotland, Edmund died in Tatura)

I have no idea what happened to Allan after arriving in Australia. Would there be any newspaper obituaries in Australia ?

Cheers, Carole.

Cherilyn Report 2 Jun 2011 07:47

Hi Carole

This looks like it might be Allan's death:

Surname: MCDONALD
Given Names: Allan James
Father: John
Mother: Sarah UNKNOWN
Death Place: FITZ
Age: 79
Year: 1957
Reg Number: 7995
Event: D

though I also notice this one, in Tatura, with mother's mn as MACDONALD?

Surname: MCDONALD
Given Names: Alex
Father: Mcdonald John
Mother: Sarah MACDONALD
Death Place: TATURA
Age: 69
Year: 1949
Reg Number: 21790
Event: D

Currently, NLA Trove newspapers only cover up to 1953 or so. I can't find one for Lizzie/Elizabeth McDONALD/MACDONALD.

Might be worth contacting the Greater Shepparton Council regarding the Tatura burials (assuming they were buried there); sometimes the burial application can provide information.

Sorry I can't offer more

Hi Poppygirl

There are no other marriages for Hardy LUMB in Victoria or NSW from 1914 to 1939.

However, there was an earlier man by the same name, who had been married to Sarah and had a son named Thomas.

Thos LUMB died in 1947 aged 83. I think he may be Hardy jnr's father?

Are you sure Hardy was married before? Do you see him in earlier electoral rolls with someone else?

Hi Cherilyn

I wonder if you could help me with some NSW records, please?

I have a cousin Arthur Appleton, born 1916 in Newcastle NSW, son of James Arthur Appleton and Alice Calland, who were born in Warrington, Lancashire and emigrated in 1914. They lived in Kurri Kurri, where James died in 1946 and Alice in 1950.

Arthur Appleton married Marion Metcalfe in Kurri Kurri in 1942, but I don't know where and when she was born, or the dates of death for either of them. They had four children

James and Alice also had a son called John, born 1904 in Warrington. He married Elsie May Reynolds in Wallsend NSW in 1937 and they adopted a son called Frank, for whom I have no details. Elsie died in 1975 but I don't have John's date of death.

James and Alice had one other child, Maggie, born 1908 in Warrington. Maggie married Lancelot Allyn Ranclaud in Kurri Kurri in 1932 and I am in touch with their daughter Anne, so I have all the details I need on that side of the family.

I hope I have given enough information for you to help me?

Keeping my fingers crossed, and thanks in advance,

Sonya

Hi Sonya

Firstly I'd suggest deleting the details of Arthur & Marion's children as they are likely to still be living.

Perhaps place these details on the 'Find Living Relatives' board?

I assume you have seen this with cemetery details and a headstone pic?
http://austcemindex.com/cemetery-inscriptions.php?id=384

I'm afraid the others are too 'recent' to be able to access any records.

According to NAA Recordsearch James Arthur snr applied to enlist in WWI in 1916 aged 41. Might be worth requesting the records.
Appleton, James Arthur; age 41; address - Kurri Kurri

Arthur also applied, for WWII service. He states he was born on 5th May 1918 in Kurri Kurri, and his occupation as profile machinist. He was aged 22 in Aug 1940 (or so he claims!), 5' 6", 131lbs, with fair hair and blue eyes. At the time he was living at 89 Barton St, Mayfield. His father's address was Maitland St, Kurri Kurri.

orry I can't offer more.

Cherilyn, please don't apologise for not being able to offer more! What you have provided is very valuable information that I had been unable to find on my own. Of particular interest is the physical description of Arthur, which is very similar to that on his maternal uncle's UK army records.

I'm extremely grateful for your help. Thank you so much.

Hi Cherilyn,

Thank you for your kind offer.

My ancestor Edmund Greenfield was transported for 7 years in 1828 and arrived in NSW. I cannot find a death reg for him in England so presume he died in Aus. Would you be able to help?

Thanks again,

Debbie

Cherilyn Report 4 Jun 2011 10:28

Hi Debbie

Sorry I can't see his death either, but it is unlikely he went back to the UK.

Poor Edmund had his Ticket of Leave cancelled on 17th Sep 1833 because he was "drunk and disorderly on the Sabbath".

He finally got his C of F in 1836:

GREENFIELD Edmund Royal George 1828 36/0592 13 Jul 1836 Certificate of Freedom

Do you have this document? It may have details of where he planned to settle. You can order it at NSW records online.

Sorry, not much help! :-\

Hi Cherilyn,

Thank you so much for the swift reply. It has been a great help. I am new to this as I only found his transportation this morning. I will try NSW records online but wonder if they will send documents to the UK. Is 36/0592 the ref for the C of F?

Yours,

Debbie

Hi Cherilyn,
Thanks for the info. I had the death record, for Hardy, which gives him as being born in 1893, according to the records for the crematorium, it states that he was 86, in 1980. Sorry, but I haven't found him with any other family, before Florence Elsa, but that is because I cannot access any Australian records, from Ancestry, this end. I shouldn't have assumed that, my apologies. Are you able to tell me if there are any other records which also gives the birth place of that person, as well as their other info. I believe that there aren't any census records accessible in australia, which would be for after 1939, is there. I have the electoral roll listings but have been trying to find out if Hardy had any family, and where they could be now, also that of his birth place.
Thanks Cherilyn, I do appreciate your time.

Hi Cherilyn,

Many thanks for the offer.

Percy Mann b 1867 in Heathfield East Sussex. last record 1881C
Sydney to England on Orova 3/7/1897 with 23yo wife.

9/12/1910 Percy & wife sailed Athenic intending to disembark in Hobart, Tassie.

The detailed page which was supposed to appear has been cut off so unable to verify their details as correct. Could you please see if you can find any details on them, please?

When you did the lookup on the Lees family for me last week you found them easily on Trove...is there an easy way to locate them or just trawl, trawl,..adding name Lees to search box?

Thanks again,
