It has to be the marriage cert, Garry David. SEND FOR IT NOW! (He is used to me shouting at him by now). I am now finding various other possibilities for his birth (including him being James Herbert).

Take Lindsey up on the offer of the army records. They might show something interesting.

Maureen, searched for all Gertrudes in York in 1911 with a brother Herbert. No luck. Based on your idea of fostered out. Will try 1901.

Get the marriage cert Garry David, we can't get any further without it.

Order it from the York Register Office rather than the GRO - they will be much more helpful if there's anything not quite right.

Superintendent Registrar, York Register Office, 56 Bootham, York, YO30 7DA. You can print the form off from this website:

http://www.ukbmdsearch.org.uk/certapp.php?type=births&data=WATKINSON%7cHerbert%7cWalmgate%7cYork%7c1892%7c1892%7c%7cYK%3aWAL%2f93%2f96%7cW%7c34215%7cyorkshire%7cYK%7c&lang=

Don't forget to include a stamped addressed envelope. Sadly they don't do online orders as some do.

They'll be just as quick, if not quicker that the GRO. Once you've got it you can maybe ring them up and ask about other siblings without having to pay. I'm good at subterfuge.

Dear Maureen ny i do like you all and i am really serious about finding herberts parents so my best bet would be to get in touch with the BORTHWICK INSTITUTE at york uni and buy a birth cert that WOULD have his parents on wouldnt it Garry david

Hi

Just done a quick search on the 1911 census ans the ONLY Herbert Watkinson born in 1892 is in the Rotherham district.

But, if you +/- it by a year you get another in Hull, county Yorkshire East Riding (with York)

Could either of these be the one?

Thank you, Garry David!!! It may not show a father, but at least we'll know who the mother is.
My best regards,
Maureen

I don 't want to throw a spanner in the works, or delay anything, but Garry David has mentioned the Borthwick Institute. Surely that isn't a place to get birth or marriage certs from is it? I thought it dealt with wills and such like.

I am a bit concerned at getting his birth cert when the marriage cert to Elizabeth Squirrel is more certain.

The addresses I gave him were for the York Register Office, I am a big believer in using local register offices where you might have further queries. They are much more amenable to answering questions than the GRO, who don't answer any at all.

having just read this, can someone clarify for me

Have you found Herbert's war records?

If so, has he named a next of kin?

Yes. Lindsey found them. It's his wife-Elizabeth Squir*l.

Throwing spanners ...............I agree because there is more info about both of them on a marriage cert, and the birth cert may NOT be him, but Gary being Gary will do it his way !

[Delete this at your peril !]

Meg-Just noticed that as well. For some reason this thread has not done well on my screen.
My reasoning for the birth cert is that I'm 99% certain that that is the Herbert we're looking for. His marriage cert may have a "father" listed (ahem),but I want to know the mother's details.
I swear I'll buy the marriage cert if necessary.

In 1911, Elizabeth Squirrell appears on the census in Middlesbrough aged 14 (1897) living with:
Edward age 34 (1877)
Henry age 7 (1904)
Arthur Ed age 9 (1902)

I realise that Garry is trying to find Herbert's parents, not Elizabeth's, but Garry has her year of birth as 1898 and the cencus is out by a year. Maybe Herbert's is the same?
