Janey - I'm getting excited!

Ernests g-grandaughter says he lied about his age on his marriage certificate saying he was 23 when he was 21, perhaps to close the age gap with Elizabeth!

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Nov 2010 20:56

Except that's backwards. ;) Might he have made himself younger than he was??

Do we have Ernest's marriage certificate, I don't suppose? Or at least the father's name, from his descendant. Or have I just lost track ...

Great stuff.
Well I've been looking for the soldier husband without much luck. He doesn't seem to be at the Milton Barracks - only nearish one there is an Albert transcribed as Darby but he's unmarried and only 20.
Also looked for brother Frederick in 1881 but he's proving elusive too.
Back tomorrow.

Just another thought on a different tack.

Several of my stepfather no 2 have Tait as a middle name.
They have origins in Scotland although I have not yet found the source of my Tait name.
I just wonder if that may give a clue to your Tait origins.

This one is about Giles but and may be useful for elimination purposes.

This one died too early in the crimea but is worth filing.

Jooleh Report 17 Nov 2010 20:34

Had a good look around for a potential soldier husband & for a likely Isabella in 1861 but nothing much found. Also looked for brother Frederick again with no luck. Then I went back to the Giles Frederick posted by Jax & JC. If he is the one then I suspect he may be linked to the 'famous' Daubeneys. Had a good look at them too -there's lots of info around including probate records that link them.

Anyway – back to the point – on FreeBMD there aren't many Giles Fredericks as given names so I searched on first names only and up popped this:

Births Jun 1864 (>99%)

DAUBENEY Giles Frederick Daubeney Islington 1b201
HUGHES Giles Frederick Daubeney Islington 1b201

Couldn't find a Hughes/Daubeney marriage.

If it was me I would deffo get that certificate to find out who the parents were!

There are also a few Robert & Ernest Hughes born around London at the right time.

I tell myself: always look at the whole page when you find a birth reg! and then I forget. ;) (Sometimes you even find a twin.)

That reg indicates that the father was Daubeney and the mother Hughes. It was kind of uncommon way back then to do a double registration for a birth to unmarried parents. Usually you just get the registration in the mother's surname with the father's surname as a middle name, if it's there. I'd get that too.

Jooleh - that's fantastic!

I've just ordered certificate and will let you all know what's on it.

Feel things are starting to move slowly together .....

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 17 Nov 2010 21:17

The link to *the* Daubeney family would be the name Giles and the spelling of the surname with a second e.

See the uk National Archives index of documents available in relation to Henry Charles Barnston Daubeney.

Apparently he was very keen on family history & traced back to a knight called Giles Daubeney.

Other sources suggest that although he was married at least 3 times he only had 2 children. Giles Barnston Daubeney, b 1841, who apparently went to Australia in 1863 and died there 1879 and Charles Henry Hill Daubeney - good mistranscription this one!

Births Mar 1844 (>99%)
Dawbency Charles Henry Hill Axminster 10 13
DAWBENER Charles Henry Hill Axminster 10 13

died 1870 in Fareham Surrey - a bachelor. wonder if he's the father? His will might tell?

He was in Heston Middx in 1861.

And you wouldn't believe how many people have Giles Daubeney-s born back to the early 1300s in their trees at GR ...

But look -- *Hill* -- maybe we're cousins, MC!!!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 Nov 2010 21:29

MC, are you in touch with all the other people who have Robert Daubeney 1865 in their trees? And also an Ernest 1866 who would match that one in 1971 I think. You've probably said you are. I just noticed there's one I've been in contact with here at GR before, a year ago -- ah yes, purely because she deleted a thread I'd spent a lot of time on while I was in mid-post ... turned out because she was supposed to ...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 Nov 2010 21:53

One reason for dual registrations is that the mother was married to someone else still and so the birth must be registered in her husband's surname.

Marriages Jun 1855
? HUGHES William Kensington 1a 104
KUHNE Fanny Kensington 1a 104
NICHOLSON John Kensington 1a 104
? WHITE Isabella Rebecca Kensington 1a 104

Name: Isabel Rebecca White
Gender: Female
Baptism/Christening Date: 08 Jul 1835
Baptism/Christening Place: SAINT ANDREW, HOLBORN, LONDON, ENGLAND
Birth Date: 25 Feb 1835
Father's Name: Thomas White
Mother's Name: Ann
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: P01051-8
System Origin: England-ODM
Source Film Number: 374359
Reference Number:
Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Matches the age of Isabella R Daubeney in 1871 ...

Looks like that one in 1851, displaying her middle initial:

Name: Isabel R White
Age: 16
Estimated birth year: abt 1835
Relation: Visitor
Where born: St Andrew, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: Norton Folgate
County/Island: Middlesex

John Chalkley 31 - occupation Turncock, yes
Caroline Chalkley 26
Caroline Jane Chalkley 3
Isabel R White 16

And in 1841 -- trying to place this Isabel(la) class-wise:

Thomas White 40
Ann White 30
Isabel White 6
Georgina White 4
Augustus White 2

Civil Parish: St Mary Islington West

Great. No idea what Thomas's occupation says. Neighbours are the usual labourer, shoemaker, brickmaker. An Attorney's Clk. So I think that does say Clk next to Thomas as I suspected. Those are some high-falutin' names, possibly including Caroline in the 1851.

They're in St Luke Old Street in 1851, Thomas is "Clerk to Oil Merchants".

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 17 Nov 2010 21:58

Janey, yes in contact with them - most of them are my cousins who copied!

Now, that Isabella is interesting! Especially with the Daubeney/Hughes connection from Jooleh.

Haven't heard back from Ernest's g-grandaughter as to what she thinks of these developments.

Such a lot to take in and disseminate - think I won't be able to do it justice properly until I've got some time off work. That'll be the Christmas break taken care of!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 Nov 2010 22:24

I added some more info to the post above. She really does seem like a good candidate for the position of Isabella R Daubeney in the 1871 census.

I'm wondering whether William Hughes was military and they're in Ireland or something in 1861. And that's how she met Daubeney ... just to get ahead of ourselves here. ;)

And I think I've just killed that theory -- DANG!!

1851

Name: Frances Kuhne
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1831
Relation: Daughter
Mother's name: Sophia Kuhner
Where born: Kensington, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Kensington

1861

Name: Frances Hughes
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1832
Relation: Widow
Where born: Kensington
Civil Parish: Kensington St Mary Abbott

So Isabella Rebecca White married Nicholson.

But ... still in the running?

Name: Isabel Rebecca White
Estimated birth year: abt 1836
Year of Registration: 1904
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at Death: 68
District: West Ham
County: Essex, Greater London
Volume: 4a
Page: 26

Nope, out of the running. In 1901 she's a visitor in West Ham. In 1871 she's a parlormaid in Finsbury (Isabella B White per Ancestry).

There's still the one who married Nicholson ...... ;)

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 17 Nov 2010 23:30

Looks like that Isabella married John Nicholson:

Ah Janey you got there before me via a different route.
