I wonder if this is William George Wellsman in 1901 ...... it is Wellsman on the image, and I have sent in a correction

If so, then the marriage to Mary Elizabeth in 1907 was his second marriage, even though he called himself a Bachelor!

1901 Census

Name: George Wellman <<<<<<<<< Wellsman on image
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1878
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Mary E
Gender: Male
Where born: St Luke, London, England

Civil parish: Willesden
Ecclesiastical parish: St John the Evangelist
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Registration district: Hendon
Sub-registration district: Willesden

George Wellman 23 Cab Driver Groom
Mary E Wellman 23 b.ca 1878, Soho, London
George W Wellman 3 b.ca 1898, New North Rd, London
Mary E Wellman 1 6 months b.ca 1899, New North Rd, London
George Wellman 10 months b.ca 1900, Kilburn, London

Address:- 4 Chichester Rd

I couldn't see a death for Mary E

it might be worth a look on the 1911, to see if this family can be found on there.

However ... George's occupation on this census would fit with William George's apparent service with the Kimberly Light Horse in 1901 (Boer War time of course)

I have received another pm from Rose ..... June contacted her to say:-

........ her parents [are] Kathleen Finch and William Wellsman

but here is the marriage for that and he has initial J

Name: William J Wellsman
Spouse Surname: Finch
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1932
Registration district: Poplar
Registration county (inferred): Middlesex
Volume Number: 1c
Page Number: 903
Find Spouse: Find Spouse Kathleen A Finch

I've lost the plot a bit but have asked June to confirm the age of William on marriage cert ( she has him as 1879 ) and his father' s name...I think it's gone off track a bit?

so maybe a bit more digging is required

Births Sep 1908 (>99%)

Wellsman William John Whitechapel 1c 229

Births Jun 1914 (>99%)

WELLSMAN William J Andrews Camberwell 1d 1770

Both in the London area .................... the one born in 1908 would have been 24 at the time of the marriage to Kathleen Finch in 1932, and the second born in 1914 would have been 18

The marriage registration:-

Marriages Sep 1932 (>99%)

HOUSEHOLD WELLSMAN ELIZABETH F 1885 26 Bethnal Green London
HOUSEHOLD WELLSMAN WILLIAM M 1909 2 Bethnal Green London
HOUSEHOLD WELLSMAN WILLIAM GEORGE M 1879 32 Bethnal Green London

If this is William John ..... and it is the only William Wellsman born 1908 +/3 years to appear,

THEN June has got her generations mixed up

William George, b. 1879 is her grandfather

and William JOHN Wellsman is her father

Madmeg Report 15 Dec 2010 21:22

Hello June

I'm new to this thread, so please excuse me for being a bit dumb and slow on the uptake.

Can I start at the latest person? Your dad is William John Wellsman b 30 June 1908, and he married your mum Kathleen A Finch in 1932. Is that right?

His dad was William George Wellsman b 1879 and mother Mary Elizabeth Harvey b 1885, who married in 1907. They appear on the 1911 census. Is that right too? Are you sure? What actual evidence have you got, for example you dad's birth certificate, or at least his marriage certificate?

You see, people haven't found a perfect census record for William George Wellsman before his marriage. If he is the one b 1876 who appears on the 1881 and 1891 census with parents William G and Emily, and sisters Amelia and Emily, he swaps his names around, but that happens.

I'd just like you to be certain you're looking for the right family.

What made you ask about Gladys Wellsman, with parents William Stanley and Esther? Why do you think they are related to your family?
