How did you get back from James Chapman 1845 to Gervase Chapman 1695 in such a short timespan?
Sounds like you're just taking other people's research as gospel without checking.

Christine Report 16 Mar 2011 14:26

That's partly so madbull but the subscriber had the correct dates and origin. She had all the siblings etc. I won't take this as gospel and do still try to find other hot matches and don,t put the info on to my tree 'till I,m sure and being a beg I don,t know yet how to go about aquiring the necessary vital certificates. I don't mind paying at all but £75 is a bit much for me. Obviously I need help with this side of genealogy ( But I have made some good friends through GR!) and am willing to learn I am nearly 60 myself thanks madbull

Always order certificates from GRO and never pay more than 9.75

Christine, is your Charles Chapman the one who was born 1878 in Barton?
If so the 1881 census shows his parents as Jarvis Chapman, 1846 and Mary Ann, 1853.

sorry about delay- had to go to doctors. .GRO? madBull - and Yes my C.Chapman is 1878 Barton-on-humber why can't I find them on the census like you do? I spent hours last night found bits but not the info you,ve sent me. This info matches the info given to me by subscriber yesterday. All the other family names she gave me all originated from Barton then Wooton, Lincs. It does look more positive Chris

Christine

Christine Report 16 Mar 2011 18:02

MargaretM Report 16 Mar 2011 18:07

Christine, you said that Charles' father was James when actually it's Jarvis on all of the censuses. Perhaps you were typing in James for father's name and that's why you couldn't find him.

GRO is general Register Office and Lancashire Ann has posted the address.

Christine

Christine Report 16 Mar 2011 18:50

no MadBull just another slip of my old fingers on the keyboard, it was Jarvis.Do you use the gr census info or do you use another site? I have also looked for hours on the later day sts. site( I,m not usually this thick I think the Shepherd ,Chapman .Tanswell and Riest thing is playing with my head. thanks for your patience - and intelligence chris

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 16 Mar 2011 18:52

I use Ancestry for the census info.

Christine

Christine Report 16 Mar 2011 19:03

mmmmmmmmmmm! someone else I have had cotact with in the early days of my genealogy experience uses that site to build up her tree. It is more expensive than GR but I do believe they do a free 2week trial. I might give it a go cos I,m getin nowhere now in gr records.I'll not pester you anymore tonight but will be in touch if/when I find something exciting on either Shepherds or Riests chris

Christine I think you will find the majority of people that help on here use other sites mainly ancesty or Find my past.
I tried GR when I first joined but found they were too difficult to use in my opinion

thanks jax I think i'mgoing to try ancestry but have just ordrered my 1st marriage certificate to get me going on my shepherd line

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 16 Mar 2011 22:03

glad you managed to order that marriage certificate OK.

If you do not want to pay for ancestry, ancestry.com is free to use in many county libraries and records offices. If you live fairly close to one it is worth a try. Even the smallest of Lancs libraries which have a computer link allow access if you are a library member as the county pays for a commercial subscription.

lancashieAnn thanks for the info. re Ancestry Have subscribed for a 2 week free trial and have found out today that my local library does indeed have free access to it. So if I just use it @ home for 2 weeks will I be able to keep building on a tree that I will have started during this 2 wk period? Now hold your breath and you too madBull. I HAVE FOUND WALTER SHEPHERD'S 1st WIFE ALL BY MYSELF!!!!! well sort of. I spoke to a cousin weeks ago who insisted she only had her father's death certif. SO, because she was an only child I thought it most likely that she did have birth cert. also. So I plucked up courage to phone her again and at last she relented and said she'd go through the papers in her attic. 2 hours later she had it and gave me the 1st wife's name - Edith Camden from Woodhouse, Sheffield. Then thanks to Ancestry last night I found for 99% sure walter's parents and siblings and possibly ediths. I did send off for marriage cert. for walter and sarah,s marriage as you kindly gave me the info needed (not arrived yet) and so can send off for ediths & walters- Worksop 1914. Now I need to find out all 3's death dates. Hvae been to local cemetry today but the stones of walter and sarah have long gone.Couldn,t find any records on ancestry last night but am going to try again tonight. Thankyou both for sticking with me all the very best ( and I don't suppose this will be the last you hear from me - Chris Shepherd

Good for you, Christine, sounds like you're really hooked now. Soon you'll be as crazy as the rest of us.

Don't forget to cancel your Ancestry when the 2 weeks are up or they'll start charging you the full amount.

Christine

Christine Report 18 Mar 2011 21:03

sure will madBull or they'll charge £85

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 18 Mar 2011 21:42

well done - you sound as though you are now getting as hooked on this lark as the rest of us

Some-one may correct me but as far as I am aware a tree on ancestry should be available after you have finished your trial period.

I admit I have not tried it as I keep my tree on my own PC and on GR as well. I am ever hopeful of finding a GR hot match!

Do let us know when that certificate arrives - it can take a little while depending on how busy they are

Christine

Christine Report 18 Mar 2011 21:46

will do alncashireAnn. I,m off now to try to find all 3 death records. Thankyou too for staying with me all the way through this complicated family chris
