Thank you for your help Rose. The only lead I have now is the 1911 entry for Jane Doris Smith at the Princess Mary Village Homes. I have contacted the Surrey Council historical society, in the hope they might be able to help me locate Jane Doris' enrolment details and other information.

Hi all,
I'm still looking for my grandfather's half sister. I now have most of her details up until 1913 when she left the Princess Mary Village Home in Surrey (aged 16). After this she seems to have vanished. There is no marriage or death record and nothing on any electoral roll within the UK. I found one possibility on a shipping record heading to Canada, however I can't seem to trace any further information other than what is on the passenger list. It does not appear she went to Australia, NZ or the USA (nothing in the immigration records).

Does anyone have any tips on what avenue I could look down next?
I would really appreciate any advice.
Thank you
Kazz.

Do you have her dob from the christening record?

There is a death in 1973, Blackpool for a Jane Doris Robson - dob 11/3/1897, but there were 4 Jane Doris's registered Q1 or 2 1897 and I think this death may be for one previously called Akester.

There is a marriage in 1937 of a Jane D Smith to Lewis Melhado in Poplar

They are on the electoral rolls certainly up to 1961 in Poplar, HAckney, Bethnal Green

Can't find a death for either of them

Any thoughts?

Hi Flip

My Jane Doris was born on the 11/4/1897 and baptised on the 25/4/1897. Thanks for your help :)

Hi HeyJudeB4Beatles

Yes I found that marriage sometime ago and ordered the marriage certificate. Unfortunately it wasn't a match with my Jane Doris. Thanks for looking though.. Much appreciated. :-)

Do you want to post up what details you found for her possibly going to Canada please?

KazzeeH Report 28 Jul 2012 12:10

Jane Smith born abt 1896 arrived in Quebec Canada on 25/6/1913 aboard the Corinthian. With a name like Jane Smith I know this is a long shot, but one I thought worth looking at.

Sorry if it seems I am taking a while to respond, I keep getting error messages when refreshing my GR and although this thread is on my watch list I'm not being notified when a post has been made.

I keep getting error messages as well! I don't think you get notices when posts are made though.

I noticed the Corinthian which Jane Smith was on was full of children going to Canada as part of Barnardos. I have contacted Barnardos and they are going to do a search for me and see if our details match. They're initial searches for children going to Canada or Australia are free however should they have a match the package with all the info is going to cost around $127AU.

After a long wait I have finally had a reply from Barnardos. Unfortunately the Jane Smith who departed for Canada in 1913 was not my Jane Doris Smith.I also found out recently from the Surrey Archives that upon leaving the Princess Mary Village Home Jane Doris did not return to the care of her family, but was put in to local employment (no record of what that might have been) which once there she was not obligate to stay. So this means she could have gone anywhere. I am thinking now that I will not be able to find either her marriage (if she married) or her death or any kind of detail on what became of her.
