Moody Blue, yes this is my guess at Samuel's family rather than one with mother Nanny and sister Nancy. But not much chance of proving it...an educated leap of faith!

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 28 Nov 2012 06:48

Yes that's why I wasn't asking about Samuel, Ann! The original thread was posted when I knew absolutely nothing about Samuel and Mary. I knew they had married in 1851 and then phut disappeared into the ether. This thread was originally ALL about finding Mary and Mary Jane in 1861 knowing Samuel had died. And because I was new at this game - and the original post was on the genealogy board - I updated the old thread to "close it" and opened this one on Find Ancestors. Hence it was this one I updated.

I may turn my attention to Samuel and Middleton at some point (in which case I will update the old thread even though it is on the "wrong" board) but all I really want to try and do is see if I can find any missing records for my dad's surpise.

Only thing I am missing about Mary (mum) is 1861 and I guess nobody is ever going to find that!

But it would also be nice if any emigration/immigration records could be found. I have not managed to find any.

Ann - I wasn't taking it as criticism but you know how trigger happy some person is :-)

I will resurrect the Samuel thread sometime (which is why I haven't deleted it) because it will be an interesting diversion for me

But it's for the future because my priority at the mo is interesting bits about my dad's direct lines....I've got to fill up forty pages!

Moody Blue Report 28 Nov 2012 16:41

Sorry my fault re Samuel.............was looking to see if Mary J was with the grandparents on 1861 but .....she wasnt ! ....and I put the 1841 up as I had found it. Just trying all angles.:)

Moody Blue - no worries - as I said to Ann...there is someone on GR who takes GREAT pleasure in hitting the report button and revels in being anonymous. But spurred on by both of you...I have just this second ordered the marriage certificate of Samuel and Mary Jane which hopefully will pin down his father! :-)

I found this yesterday (I have the image)

Name: Mary Jane Cadogan
Birth Date: abt 1853
Age: 61
Port of Departure: Sydney, Australia
Arrival Date: 6 Aug 1914
Port of Arrival: London, England
Ports of Voyage: Melbourne
[Adelaide]
[Durban]
[Cape Town]
Ship Name: Ballarat
Search Ship Database: View the 'Ballarat' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping Line: Peninsula and Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd
Official Number: 131851

But I have not been able to find her "going back" which I know she did. She died in Leura Blue Mountains NSW Australia and in the probate her address was given as Caversham Otago (from memory). Alice May's diaries also indicate they came back at least once and stayed in Cardiff (but she was apparently a bit of a fantasist so don't know how accurate or when).

As for the 1861 census...tried for an hour last night to no avail :-(
