A copy of his birth certificate should name his parents. With that information you should then be able to discover more about his ancestors. |

There is no obvious birth registration for Margaret Jane Hodgson; there are two entries for [edit: sorry, I meant 1881 census] for Margaret Hodgson born approx 1867 in the Guisborough area; one of these has middle initial letter J, born in Roxby rather than Scaling (the two places are a couple of miles apart). They are both tiny places now, when looking at them on Google maps - very different from Sheffield! |
