If William Glover worked as a Wharf Labourer when Evelyn married could the occupation on the birth certificate for Eveline Glover be Stevedore? (stevedore - A person employed, or a contractor engaged, at a dock to load and unload cargo from ships).

Sometimes a capital S can look like a T.

Gavin....I dont have access to other sites so am only going from previous threads on here...
You need to get the Birth/Marriage Certs asap to confirm you are connected to the correct families..(going back)..
The variation in spelling for Mulcahy is numerous and the only definative is Ó Maolchathaigh.( you wont be finding that other than in Ireland) !!!
Am away to get sorted afore the Match comes on...Will be back later unless its Head in the Gas Oven time...

Eringobragh1916 Report 3 Jan 2012 17:29

The Laurence Mulcahy and Margaret Herron connection (as I read it) comes from a tree on Ancestry so you would after be needing to confirm that particular marriage and subsequent children...
I will have a look around Southern Munster (Where the surname originates) and see if I can find anything....

Hi

The family information I have is just verbal from my mother who says she recalls being told as a child that her mothers family name McKie came from Ireland but the English locals couldnt spell it so they wrote it at it sounded in the Irish accent..... so it was often written as McKie by the english people they worked for.... then they just stayed with it... could be pure rubbish i guess.
The other information is also in line with my own, however I got mine from another relation who may have gone down the wrong line so I definately need to verify it all.
As Bazz provided earlier in the thread I can see John Mulcahy marrying Rose Bonner and Rose's parents as Bernard Bonner and Mary Carroll.
The death of Laurence Mulcahy would fit with the one mentioned before as being married to Margaret Herron... with John as their son.

Eringobragh1916 Report 3 Jan 2012 11:44

Gavin...Dont know if you have this but John Mulcahy married Rose Bonner (BONNAR) 1888 Reg Middlesbro.

The 1881 Census shows Bernard "Bouner" and family living Dobby's Blds. well it may be worthwhile checking 2 doors along from them as there is a "MULCABY" family with son John ....(another possible mistranscription...)
A Lawrence "Mulchay" Death Reg 1880. aged 43 (Middlesbro.)

As an aside.. I am not too convinced that "Mulcahy" would eventualy become "McKie" but who knows..if you have family info.relating to the change then it will eventualy show when you get the Certs....

Gavin, if you don't have an Ancestry subscription then you can search and view public Ancestry trees on Mundia, an Ancestry spin-off.
http://www.mundia.com/gb/

On there you can search and view trees and make contact with owners - very useful. However, a lot of Ancestry users (but not all) are like sheep and just copy stuff willy-nilly from each other's trees and suggested matches without doing any verification.

If you just want to collect names and have the biggest tree, well fine. But, if you want accuracy and pride in your OWN research then you have to do some verification. Buy your certificates from GRO (as you've now been advised many times) a lot of other places are rip-offs. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Gavin Report 2 Jan 2012 23:38

ah, ok

do you know who's tree it was... could they be a family link to me... or was it general research?

jax Report 2 Jan 2012 23:27

Those parents details for Rose Bonner could be correct but after looking at that persons tree I would take it with a pinch of salt, unless you can get some sort of verification

Bazz Report 2 Jan 2012 22:59

Carrol is Mary's surname and there is no record of her parents or the parents of Bernard on the tree

This could be Evelyn's birth (but the name is spelt differently):-

Name: GLOVER, Eveline
Registration District: Middlesbrough
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1895
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 9D
Page No: 532

If you buy Evelyn's marriage certificate (reference given earlier by Kucinta) it should name her father. I can't find Evelyn on the 1901 or 1911 census.
