Find Ancestors

Please could someone help, I am looking for the marriage of Arthur James Childs born Bedford 1890 his wife was peggy or maybe Margaret I have no surname, they went to San Diego to live. I believe Peggy and her daughter Zena Childs came back to England after Arthur died, Peggy was a women horse racer on a horse called Willow Bramble and one many trophies, this must have been before 1938 as that is when Arthur died

I dont know if you have access to ancestry.co.uk but someone on there has a tree set up including arthur James Childs B.1890 Bedford, died san diego California.
I cant help as I don't have access to this site but just did a search and show this.

You haven't said where we should be looking for the marriage for you; England or US?

There are quite a few Arthur Childs marriages on FreeBMD . I did input Margaret as the spouse name but as you aren't certain it was not a search likely to be accurate.

Likewise you don't say where Zena was born and her birth may help you to find her mother's details.

You will have to decide if this is the correct child. As it is before 1912 the mother's maiden name is not included here but it will be on the actual certificate and unless you have some luck with info elsewhere which I can't see that you will. I have tried to find Arthur and Zena on the 1911 but neither show up.

Looks like you will have to purchase this certificate even if only to eliminate her from your family.

Always worth Googling the unusual. If you haven't Googled Peggy or the horse yet it's something for you to try.

I'm no horse racing enthusiast but it seems to me that it is very regulated and probably keeps a lot of records. If you know which country she rode in, you could try contacting the relevant horse racing authority.

Peggy is a name often used for someone with the name Margaret.

Hi, thankyou so much for all the information, Arthur James childs born Bedford is deffnately the same as mine, but his wife does not match, unless he was married twice, found out that Peggy was a Margaret Ellen Childs born 1879 in Ohio and died in San Diego in 1970 Thanks again

Just watched a clip of her racing in 1931,she came second.

Just a thought if she was born 1879 and she was racing in 1931 that would make her 52.
I would have thought this would have been a bit old for a Jockey.

If Peggy was born in 1879 she would've been a jockey in her 40s and 50s. Isn't that a little unlikely?

Peggy certainly doesn't look 51 in the 1930 photo of her on http://www.gettyimages.com.au

The tree on Ancestry is the grandson of Peggy Childs,includes photos of her with other jockeys.

Arthur James Childs married 1/11/1921 to Hilda Petrocochino Percival born Surrey england 10/27/1895 died 1/11/1982 in Saugerties New York.

She married again in Worthing 1941 O/N/D 2b 1023.

I don't think so.

That thread doesn't really have anything about the Childs and certainly nothing about Peggy Childs being Hilda Petrocochino/Percival. The 1901 has Hilda as a Petrocochino with her mother & siblings in Hampstead. This was following a lead from the Ancestry tree.
