Thank you for your help, LA. That's filled in a number of spaces for me.

Now finally, do you think that Mary P (with the will) was the one born in 1840?
A bit unlikely given the date of death. Does anyone have any other ideas please?

tempest

tempest Report 14 Feb 2012 21:01

possible death??

the only one in Ulverston, Polly can be short for Mary

do you have a copy of the actual will? It might be worth spending the £6 to get it

this link explains how to order it

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1235425?page=0

I can really recommend doing this; from by Grandmother's bag of papers I had a copy of an account from my 2 x great uncle's probate with names and amounts and only by getting the actual will/ probate did things make sense of who the people named actually were

grannyfranny

grannyfranny Report 14 Feb 2012 22:44

Thanks tempest. Yes, I was considering getting the will, as you say, it should explain who they all are.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 14 Feb 2012 22:50

I would say it would be more than a bit unlikely that Mary was born 1840

As Tempest says - it would probably be worth getting the will

If you know if there was a will proved at Lancaster I could have a look in the LRO whenever I go which is probably quicker than waiting for it by post. I think they have copies upto about 1965

grannyfranny Report 15 Feb 2012 00:00

Thank you, but if it's in Lancaster, I'm up there every other week too.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 15 Feb 2012 14:06

not sure if they have copies of the actual wills in Lancaster. In the LRO there are big bound copies beautifully written of all the wills proved at Lancaster and Liverpool for at least up to the 1930's. Not sure about later wills.

I may be going tomorrow as we will have no electricity in our area and therefore no heating or computer!

grannyfranny

grannyfranny Report 15 Feb 2012 22:24

Don't know where it was proved, but the solicitors name is in Barrow in Furness, and the account is dated 16th April 1955.

If you see this, Ann, I'd appreciate an enquiry for me, I've already been over there on Tuesday.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 16 Feb 2012 12:56

probate ties the Dudson family in!

Pennington Mary of 5 Cubas-Cottages Ulverston Lancashire spinster died 15 July 1954 at Stanley Hospital Ulverston Administration Manchester 26 October to John Thomas Dudson service engineer Effects £741-10s-10d

so it looks like she did not leave an actual will but sometimes the letters of administration do give extra information

grannyfranny

grannyfranny Report 16 Feb 2012 13:20

Ah! Many thanks for that Ann.

So what is the order for inheriting with no will?

Parents
Brothers and sisters/ their offspring
?

The people on the list got 1 fifth each, which was divided amongst their
issue.

I have added further found info to the first post.

Mary is presumably a descendant of this Pennington family. Surely any mothers family would also be entitled?

Could someone kindly find the family in 1851 and 61 to confirm the relationships?

Further info added to the first post, and thoughts to the last post.
Could someone kindly look at the family in 1851 and 61?
