There is a marriage in Burnley for a Millie Ling
I can't see a corresponding birth.Might be worth further investigation?

Hello MarieCeleste,

I don't have Milly's exact date of birth but she was born in 1892, Q3 at Barling (Rochford District), Essex.

Regards,

Joy

I'll check that Linge marriage, Grainne.

I have found the surname listed as Lynge, Lingie, Linjie, Linje and another family member found a Ling - so it could be worthwhile pursuing the Ling name. Burnley seems quite a distance from Essex and Durham where Milly had siblings, though.

Still, it's worth a try, thank you.

I'm searching through the Finch births to see if Millicent's (mmn) name is spelled Ling or Linge.

So far nothing - but there are a lot of Finch births in Essex (I know children may not necessarily have been born in Essex).

1895 is nearer to the 1892 birth of Milly than 1897 is.

I found a Milly Maria Ling born in Suffolk.

Still looking.

Got some more information on Milly.

Apparently, she had a son, Herbert, on 12 August 1918 in Rochford, Essex. I should think she named him after her brother who died at the Battle of Jutland (see earlier response to my query).

I don't know what happened to Milly after that date, though.

So probably Millie was unmarried at that time..?

I've found a travel record as follows and I wonder if this could be Milly.

Miss M Ling, age 29, nurse
from Southampton to South Africa on13 August 1920
on the 'Balmoral Castle' (apparently to Capetown)

This could be her as I have in my possession a photo of an unidentified nurse which was in my grandfather's effects (Milly is his youngest sister). (I submitted it to Genes several weeks ago.)

Would anyone tell me how I can find out what happened to her?

Yes Misty. I found that birth and death and wondered whether he, too, was Milly's child. I found a death for Herbert as a baby too.

From memory, I found another Linge birth with mmn Linge too.

If they're Milly's children it's quite sad. However, we have several members of family with the universal blood group and the babies' and Milly's blood group may not have been compatible - easily sorted now but not "in the olden days".

Again, though, it's not certain that this is the case nor is it certain that they're Milly's children without buying the birth certificates.

The death certificate of a young child of an unmarried mother is likely to name her and you would know the cause of death too.
