Is it possible that they did not marry ......... but said they were married when the baby was registered?

You do not have to show any proof of being married ...... the mother's word is taken for it.

It is only if a man not married to the mother what the man has to either appear in person in the Registrar's office OR submit a letter accepting parentage.

jax Report 11 Apr 2012 23:22

So that marriage in 1940 cannot be for Joanna's Horace then if they were still married in the 1950s

The address in 1946 is his address on discharge papers...very confusing I must say.

So if Horace born 1896 married Helen in 1940? was she a widow or divorcee?

Still not quite understanding whether we are looking at two different men or the one who joined the Canadian army, was married to Helen but had a fling with Stella?

Maybe as I said she married in the name of Helen for some reason?

Do you know why she moved to London?

If Stella married again in 1945 did she divorce while her husband was at war?

Could it be a possibilty that the siter Margaret DID marry Horace and my nan Stella had some kind of affair with him??

But that would not mae sense surely as on my uncles birth cert mothers name is Stella Stone??

Surely she must have married him??

Any reason on why someone would use a different name to get married (especially her sisters) xx

jax

jax Report 11 Apr 2012 19:52

It seems that Stella had a sister called Margaret E if the E stood for Ellen that can also be used as Helen.

If Stella married Horace in 1940 she may have used the name Helen instead for some reason, I dont know the answer or the reason but maybe you should purchase that marriage cert to see who the father was and her age given.

Horace was twice her age but she was also over 21 so she did not need permission to marry....but there is no marriage for a Stella to a Stone.

When Stella married Harry Burt she gave the middle intial as L...where did that come from?

Jax, thank you for your help in this

Clearly i am not no where near as experienced as yourself

Could you please explain what you mean by your previous post

My uncle always said he felt that something was being kept from him regarding his father - some kind of family secret???

I have edited my post above but could Stella's sister have married Horace? but it is getting confusing :-)

Or just used her sisters name ??

Joanna Louise Report 11 Apr 2012 19:31

Hi jax

Yes, he was 44ish when he joined.

There must be a spelling mistake somewhere as i have have Stella's mothers death cert and that says Kate Lally.

My uncle David did live with his mother which i know one of the addresses was 29 Bensham Manor Road, Thornton Heath

Not sure where the name Rowe would have come from - not one i have heard. I know that Stella did marry Harry Burt on the 11/08/1945 as this was my fathers dad, just dont know if Stella married Horace xxx

Hi Joanna,

Quick question:

Who did your uncle know as his mother? Presumably he would live with his mother whilst his father was away in Canada????

Did your uncle know his father?

I'm having difficulty finding a birth for Stella Lally. Found it now, also found one marriage, as follows:

Spouse Surname: Rowe

Thank you so much for your replies xxx

No, i dont have his death cert, all we know was that he was not killed during the war as he was discharged back to England on the 07/09/1945 back to his home of 103 Ponsonby Buildings, Treveris Street, Blackfriers, London which was the address he was living at when registered for the army (also the address of his wife Ellen)

Desperate to know if he married Stella??
