As previously posted - Martha's death

9454/1915 HENDERSON MARTHA / THOMAS / RANDWICK

She was interred at Waverley Cemetery. This is not online unfortunately but if you contact the cemetery, it may reveal Thomas' death date, assuming they are interred together.

You may need to order their marriage certificate; or one of their death certs, to find out more. The death certs will state how long they had lived in any state of Australia, which may help identify their arrival.

NB The death notices I posted are for the Thornton children (ie sblings of Martha), not the Henderson children :-)

Thanks for all your help. I am still seeking birth details for Thomas Henderson and Martha Thornton and their parents. I am also interested in the arrival in Australia of both parents and Thomas and Martha if they were born overseas.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for all your help. I was interested in birth details of Thomas Henderson and Martha Thornton and their parents if this was available , and their arrival in Australia. I was only aware that Robert Greenway Henderson was one of twelve children, so this is very revealing. Your assistance is appreciated.

The marriage notice mentions Surry Hills - there was a James and Mary HENDERSON in Surry Hills in the 1840s. May be his parents??? (assuming he arrived with them as a child from Liverpool)

There was also a John HENDERSON in Surry Hills around this time...and a John with wife Susannah Mary, she died in East Maitland in 1891...may be a connection?

HENDERSON.-Died, at his residence, Hunter street, West Maitland, on April 30th, 1892, John Henderson, aged 77 years.

7885/1892 HENDERSON JOHN / JAMES / ANN / WEST MAITLAND

[his wife was Jean]

Re death: 12401/1897 HENDERSON THOMAS JOHN CATHERINE WEST MAITLAND

This is not Thos' death as he was still alive in Heppy's death notice in 1917.

I wonder if this is the above Thos? (Singleton Argus, 1897)

Typhoid fever is spreading at West Maitland and several cases are under treatment in the hospital. Thomas Henderson, a baker, residing at East Maitland, succumbed to the disease in the hospital after a week's treat ment.

He appears on the list of signatories to a petition signed in 1859, "by one hundred and forty-four resident householders and freeholders of the District of Darling Point, Upper Paddington and Watson’s Bay, praying for the erection of their locality into a Municipality". It became known as Woollahra!

Thomas Thornton, John-street, Point Piper

That led me to this family tree page - turns out Maria's maiden name was Greenway!!! :-)

I can't see their arrival to NSW but they were there after 1851 and before 1856 (birth of Hepzebah, Paddington district - d. 1942 as Hephzibah). If you need further evidence there's this death notice for eldest son in 1879:

THORNTON.-April 17, at his residence, 128, Albion-street, Thomas Greenway Thornton, eldest son of the late Thomas Thornton, of Woollahra, aged 41 years.

Thanks for all your help in this matter. The information opens up my grandfather's family very clearly. It appears that Mary P Henderson born 1882 may be the same person as Myra Pearson Henderson who died on 18/02/1885. I am interested if you agree that this is correct. I am also interested in any suggestions on confirming the birth details of Thomas and Martha and their travel to Australia if they were born in UK.
Again many thanks for your help.
