LancsAnn has good advice, but I'd try the local register office first, cos it is from them that the birth records come. The GRO only have as good as they are provided from the local register office. Tell them you have already paid for a certificate and just want to check if there is a time of birth that should be there. Offcially they shouldn't tell you, but most will when they know you have already paid for a certificate.

Squint at that birth cert again. Where it shows date of birth, are you absolutely sure there isn't some squiggle that you can't quite read that might be the time of birth.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 19 May 2012 22:27

was the birth cert you received a handwritten modern copy or a photocopy of the original?

It may be worth a phone call to the GRO to check explaining the date of birth does not match the registration qtr and asking them to check

Maybe whoever registered the death got the DOB wrong.
perhaps it would be worth sending for the twin´s birth cert which should have exactly the info you are looking for.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 18 May 2012 23:37

so that does seem as though that was the wrong birth certificate

I would have guessed that if her twin lived long enough to be named and registered then there should be a time of birth on the certificate

Thankyou all, first answer to Lancashire Ann Yes the certificate i have received is the one you have also found for Florence Emma born Mansfield Notts & her mothers maiden name is Staley on the certificate as we don't know the maiden name of Florence Emma & nobody left to ask , we thought maybe we had the correct certificate But the date of birth is wrong or maybe the wrong date was entered onto the birth certificate as you have all said could & does happen sometimes Madmeg, my aunt mentioned a few times that she had a twin sister who died at birth but she never mentioned her twins name I have just looked at the bith certificate I have & there isn't a time of birth on it Mike you have the right marriage for my aunt's sister Nellie & Brother -in-law George Holland thankyou

I may be a bit slow, but if you have the bc of Florence Emma, surely it has the mother's maiden name, which according to previous posts is Elizabeth Staley. Unless Elizabeth was previously married, that is what the bc should say.

Does it? And does it show a time of birth for Florence Emma, as was the case for births of twins?

If the parents on these certs match those on Florence's birth, I would say someone maybe got the birthday wrong.

is this the birth cert you sent for?

Births Dec 1913 (>99%)
Holden Florence E Staley Mansfield 7b 165

if so it seems rather odd that the birth date on it is in June. Allowing for the fact that births should be registered within 6 weeks the leatest qtr that a June birth could be registered in is Sept, whereas a late Aug birthday could be reg (just) in Dec qtr

it would help if you could give us her fathers details from the marriage certificate. Do they match that on the birth certificate? Could Florence have been born before marriage and be registered under a different surname.
