The coronation of Gerge V took place 22/6/1911 although he acceeded to the throne 6/5/1910 - so he may have been wrong about being born a year earlier. Not sure how or if this helps though.

The Richard Drury census I posted earlier was registered as Richard John at birth.

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 18:28

Thanks for the coronation information - in which case, maybe he was told he was born in 1912 but thought he was born 1911. Will go check 1912 now!

Thanks for the Richard John details - I will go have a look at that too.

if 1911 is the right Richard i wonder if he had died or left the family??
a possible death for the 1911 one looking at age

I tried looking for the Richard John b Hackney in the census but could only find him in the 1911 like you listed - who were his parents? Where abouts in London did he live 1881 - 1901?

That death is definitly a posibility - only rumoured that he died so it could be. The other option is that Richard John's surname wasn't Drury - George Henry could have just written that down as he might not have known.

A proper mystery!

If you check out BMD I think he was the only Richard born in London area 1870-80, and was recorded as Richard John Drury.

Was George married before his marriage to Peggy? It's just that if I've got the right marriage he was around 42 when they married & I think Peggy was previously married..

Sarah

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 19:24

Thank you so much for those - I can see them now on Ancestry - thought I was going blind!

Sarah

Sarah Report 4 Jun 2012 19:26

Yes Peggy was previously married to a Samuel Frederick Wood. I don't know whether George was married before or not - he lists bachelor on his marriage certiificate to Peggy. We know he was living with Samuel Frederick Wood's brother John Henry Wood and his wife Violet and it is rumoured that he had an affair with Violet. George was in the RAF in world war II so thought this might explain a later marriage?

have you thought of sending for George's RAF records info on this link. You will have to pay for them.

Have you thought about this birth index as you say he" believes" he was born in Islington?

Just searched for a previous marriage and there are a few dotted around the country which could be possible if George was in the RAF and we don't know where he was stationed - nothing jumps out at me though.

I had already thought of getting the RAF records - just waiting for my aunty to find George's death certificate as we have to send that off too to prove he has died - she has put it in a safe place! We may well have to get another copy of it for this purpose.

Might just be a coincidence that there is a birth in Norwich but wasn't Richard Drury staying with a family (Marsters) who originated from Norfolk on the 1911 census?

Flip

Flip Report 5 Jun 2012 07:37

I think the George H born Norwich is on the 1911 census aged 1 month but recorded as George Albert - is with parents, grandparents & brother. Looks unlikely he is the right one.

Flip

Flip Report 5 Jun 2012 08:33

Assuming the fathers name is correct, there are only 3 births for Richard J Drury (that I can see 1850-1900), one died - leaving Richard John 1876 Hackney & Richard James 1884 St Asaph. By 1901 Richard James is in London area and still single in 1911.

There's a marriage in Fulham 1918 to Ruth M Carne - don't know if Ancestry has more on their records for this marriage to see which Richard it was.

Sarah

Sarah Report 5 Jun 2012 10:39

Yes I think we can discount the Norfolk George then. As for the Richards, there is the possibility that he was registered without the J which would mean a lot more possibilities - but definitly best to check out the Richard J's first.

The Ruth Mary Carne marriage was to Richard James Drury 21 Jun 1918. Richard's father was William Drury. Both were living at 750 Fulham Road.May Eveline Gladys Drury was a witness. Don't think is him which leave the Richard John of Hackney.

Going to look in to the Brighton Drury's today to see if that turns anything up

Sarah

Sarah Report 5 Jun 2012 12:05

I've been looking in to George Frederick Drury of Brighton and his children. One of his daughters Rose Miriam Drury married George James Deane and had a couple of children, shown on 1911 in Reigate, Surrey. At some point between 1911 and 1949, she emigrated to Canada, passed through Hawai, and on to Australia. There is a death for a George J Deane in England so I'm thinking her family didn't go with her so perhaps she had an affair with someone and got pregnant resulting in my George Henry Drury. He was told that his mother emigrated to Canada so this could be a definite possibilty. Interestingly, there is a George H Dean born Jun 1911 in Wandsworth. Could this be him I wonder?!?
