Hi!
I'm hoping to find out any information about my great-grandfather - Michael Joseph Quinton.
He was born in Templescoby, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland around 1858 or 1859.
His parents were Michael Quinton and Cecelia Bradley. He had a sister - Catherine Celia Quinton (b. 1855 d. 1926)
In 1877; Michael, Catherine and their Mother all immigrated to Sydney, Australia.
Anything about any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Paul Quinton.

Yes. That's him. :)
There are some details there that i wasn't aware of. Do you have any more information?

Thank you! :)

Paul,
If that is your tree on Ancestry, you already seem to have loads of info for this family - I was just wondering what additional info you were specifically looking for
According to the tree Catherine married a James KIrgan in NSW before the immigration date that you quoted, or was the 1877 voyage her 2nd entry into Australia ?
Or perhaps it is another Paul Quinton that owns this tree

Paul

Paul Report 30 Jun 2012 15:04

Hi Barry.
Yes, that is my tree on Ancestry.
I've got a great deal of information, but the man is still quite a mystery. Probably more so after he came to Australia, but I'd also like to know about his life and his family and ancestors he had in Ireland before he immigrated.

Yes, I realised that my initial information about Catherine immigrating in 1877 was incorrect. She was already living in Australia by then as she had married James Kirgan in 1875.

Checked the children from the above marriage and they all have Michael listed as the father

Paul

Paul Report 30 Jun 2012 19:45

Thank you for all of that updated information. Most of that I already have, but I did not know when Michael's parents were married.

There is confusion with Michael marrying Ann Anderson and Rosina Boorn marrying John Quinton. On Rosina's Marriage certificate, John's occupation is listed as 'Fireman'. On Michael's marriage certifcate, his occupation is listed as 'Fireman'. Is this a huge coincidence, or is it the same man?
Michael's name appears on all of the children's birth certificates where Rosina is listed as the mother. His occupations is also shown as 'Fireman'.

He could also just as easily be the Joseph Quinton you listed above too!

I know that Rosina re-married to a man named William H Bullock in 1914. Just to create more confusion, her name was listed as "Rosina C Kirgan". The Kirgan name is another story altogether!
I have no record of Michael divorcing Ann, nor do I have any record of his death.

Any help with this information would be greatly appreciated as well. :)

If this 1917 marriage is the same person, then he married again while Rosina was still alive?

Why was she listed as 'Kirgan'

Gee

Gee Report 1 Jul 2012 08:00

This is the death corresponding to the inquest that I posted earlier. I think you need to buy the certificate to check the details.

It would make sense that this is the husband of Rosina as she marries again a couple of years later

Ive added info to the Anderson/Quinton marriage in 1883, Ann died within a year of marriage

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 1 Jul 2012 08:34

His marriage notice:

The Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 17 April 1883
QUINTON—ANDERSON.—February 24, 1883, at the Presbyterian Manse, Michael Joseph Quinton, of Sydney, to Ann Galloway Cecilia Anderson, only daughter of Captain W. Anderson, of Arbroath, Scotland. Home papers please copy.

As Gins has posted, looks like Ann died in 1884; they had no children.

Gee

Gee Report 1 Jul 2012 08:49

Thanks Cherilyn

I cant see a death for Nellie Bullock (Dalley) after the marriage in 1917?

Paul

Paul Report 1 Jul 2012 10:46

Thank you Gins and Cherilyn. :)

There is some very interesting information there.

It's intriguing to me that the same man (William H Bullock) could marry so many women in such a short period of time. 1909, 1914 and then 1917? Was he marrying women who were about to pass away?

If the death record I found for him is correct, he would've been 70 when he married Rosina! (I've only been able to find one death record for him).

Where did you find the info about Ann dieing? There is nothing on the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages website about it.

Florence Quinton (formerly Cocklin) v Rupert Lawrence Quinton, on the ground of desertion

Paul

Paul Report 1 Jul 2012 15:41

That last entry is rather confusing.

Rupert married Jessie Frances Cocklin in 1914. I'm not sure where the name 'Florence' comes from.

I also found newspaper court records from 1912 of Rupert having to face court over a criminal assault.
